I have a reasonable fear of being late for trains, especially when I have purchased non-refundable tickets.
Today’s train ride jitters was compounded by a last minute rush because I realized I had forgotten to put a commercial invoice on the box of wine that I was shipping to Decanter. I rushed to get the required paperwork filled, printed and attached to the box of wine that was awaiting pickup some 500 meters away. And because I was rushing, I lost my way and somehow my 15 minute solution turned into a 45 minute problem. Thank goodness for map AP’s.
After collecting my bags, I arrived at Victoria Station hu***ng my 70lb suitcase, my 35lb carry on, and my bulging backpack; anxious and not confident that the Victoria train station was also Victoria Metro!
After locating someone official, I ask ‘Is the Victoria Metro Station near here’?
Indeed it is, he replied, look behind you sir.
I got onto the correct metro platform, jumping on the first train convinced that it was the correct one….then second guessed myself, realizing I had NO room for error. Indeed I was said the foreign gentleman by the door, Euston station is 3 stops away. Being crammed like a sardine I could not read the map on the train’s inside wall indicating the stations and thus my progress.
And after 3 stops…..PANIC…not Euston…OMG.
So I asked the short man beside me who was buried deep within his ghastly black faux fur cloak, all the while bumping into him accidentally with my rolling 100 pounds of apparent inexcusable effrontery, ‘excuse me but can you tell me if this train is going to Euston Station’?
No, he replied, you have to get off right now and go to the opposite platform, you missed your stop”
Damn I thought, I’ve surely missed my train now.
And just before I leapt out of the train like the broken panicked person I had morphed into, a beautiful woman with long flowing blond hair, smiling with kindness and some amusement said, ‘ No, don’t get off the train, it’s the next stop!’
Suffice it to say I arrived 15 minutes early, very sweaty but mostly grateful for the Angels who take care of me.
