May is Celiac Awareness Month 💚 and we wanted to share a little bit of the story behind Duinkerken Foods.
Back in 2005, our founder Brenda was diagnosed with celiac disease. At the time, gluten free foods were hard to find — and even harder to enjoy. Family recipes and simple moments in the kitchen suddenly became stressful and limiting.
So Brenda started creating her own gluten free baking mixes at home. What began as a way to safely enjoy baked goods with family and friends slowly grew into what is now Duinkerken Foods.
Today, the journey has come full circle. Brenda’s daughter, Jillian — now CEO of Duinkerken Foods — also lives with celiac disease. Because of that, this business has always been personal for our family. We understand the label reading, the worry about cross contamination, and the feeling of just wanting food that tastes good and feels normal again.
Over the years, we’ve met so many incredible people in the celiac and gluten free community, and it’s become so much more than baking mixes to us. Jillian is also actively involved with Celiac Canada PEI Chapter because helping raise awareness and support others on their journey means a lot to our family.
At the heart of it all, Duinkerken Foods was built from love, family, and the belief that no one should have to miss out on the joy of sharing good food together.
