Today was the Last field irrigation(watering) of our pumpkins/sunflowers and corn for the season!
We live in a little dry microclimate in the South Surrey and White Rock area. The air flow from the ocean pushes the clouds past us where they pile up and rain on Langley and Maple Ridge and other municipalities closer to our local mountains. Which means for us to grow pumpkins and have them thrive, we need to support their growth with regular weekly watering. We call it making rainbows 🌈 today was our last 🌈 making of the summer! Only a few types of pumpkins are still growing new fruit, most are finished, plants are dying off and pumpkins are maturing nicely!🎃. We grew over 25 varieties this year, with a few squash and lots of gourds too! Our season opening is coming up soon Sept 19/20!

Yesterday was a significant day at the farm. Not only was it the one month until opening but it was also Nintendo day! The first pumpkins to leave the farm for the past few years have gone to Nintendo Canada for their fall advertising campaign. Now it really starts to feel like fall on our farm!

We still have a week of summer camps, but we are already working hard to prep for our pumpkin patch season opening Sept 19&20th.

Friday night was bat catching night on our farm. Researchers from UBC are studying bats on farms across the lower mainland. Part of the research conducted is looking for and testing for white nose fungus on our bat populations. White-nose
syndrome is a fungus that can cause death and greatly reduce bat populations. And we need these special little animals for mosquito control! 🦇 🦟

Bat trapping was slow with only one bat trapped and studied. A 7g female. This was a mature female who had given birth in the past.

Researchers Chloe and Sophia were very professional and treated this tiny little mammal with respect and care. But as you may expect this 7g Little brown bat was not impressed and was trying hard to chew their fingers off! Thankfully as Chloe and Sophia work with bats on a daily basis they have been vaccinated for rabies.
A friendly reminder to all, do not handle dead or alive bats, they can carry rabies which can be fatal if not treated for immediately.

Our little bat was weighed, measured, swabbed, and blood, stool and fur samples were collected. Our LBB was offered a drink and food, then carefully released so as not to fly back into the net.❤️
I was lucky to have been there when it was caught and I learned so much about bats and the data collection process!

Thank you Chloe and Sophia for answering all of my questions!
This bat research and half a dozen other cool environmental research projects are underway on our farm. All of them are part of the government funded PERCS program. Perennial Ecosystem Research of Carbon sequestration
