We focus on minimal processing, and adding the nutritional value that is often lost in commercial prepacked baked goods, all while maintaining the yumminess of traditional baking! -baby! Baking is in my blood, all the way back to my great grandmother who was a pastry chef for the Supper Club, right here in our little city of Surrey. I have always been health conscious in my cooking and baking, working from scratch to avoid the unnecessary ‘junk’ often found in pre made food. As my little one became busier, (and hungrier!) I just didn’t have time to bake from scratch. I wanted something that was quick, but as I perused the aisles at the health food stores, I noticed many of the snacks were marketed as healthy, but lacked nutritional value...they were organic, but in my opinion, filled with empty calories, and usually high in sugar. I was also disappointed in the baked goods at the local coffee shops, the selection seemed high in refined sugars, and mostly used white flour. As a sleep deprived mama, it’s hard to get energy for the day with those choices! As a new mom, and living in a densely populated neighbourhood, I have met so many families. Many of these families are minimizing or eliminating grains/wheat, dairy, refined sugars&oils for a variety of reasons. I had dreamed of owning a traditional baking business one day, but when I learned of this demand I started experimenting using alternative ingredients. I tried a few recipes online, but they never turned out as tasty as they looked. So I learned more, and experimented more, and eventually came up with a small menu. After a whole lot of taste testing, my dear neighbours and friends encouraged me to start selling...and Modern Mama Bakery was born!
