This week, as we continue to bale and wrap silage, here's a short video of the wrapping process. The wrapper is remote control from the tractor. The bales are double wrapped to make them airtight and promote good fermentation without spoilage. The bales are stacked 3 tier high to minimize the ground they cover.

Last week we filled the bunker with chopped first cut silage for the dairy. This week we continue with dairy/beef silage bales which, as you'll see are wrapped in plastic to ferment.

We chop silage with a pull behind chopper and high dump. More modern equipment includes self propelled choppers and silage wagons. With this system the truck drives into the field and the tractor operator dumps the load from the high dump into the truck for transport to the bunk. Lots of moving parts!

Corn seeds are in! The last time corn, for silage, was grown on our farm was in the 1970s. Due to the two drought summers of 2024 and 25 we are looking for silage volume. But, also due to the rising cost of purchased supplements (grain and minerals) we are looking to offset some of that need with some high energy corn silage! As with anything new, there are some nervous moments! We are hoping it germinates, grows well, and the bear and raccoons go easy on us! Stay tuned!
