The program is available to anyone needing our services. Meals are all made in-house and are diabetic and cardiac friendly. Meals are delivered by friendly volunteers between 4:00PM and 6:00PM. The cost of the meals is determined by an income-based, sliding scale. Who may request this service? Requests may come from persons in need, relatives, friends, neighbours, community agencies such as hospit

al social services, nurses, VON, Public Health, doctors, clergy, etc. How and where are the meal prepared? Meals include full course hot dinners consisting of an entree, soup or salad, and dessert. The meals are prepared at A Better Bite Community Kitchen under the management of a registered dietitian. Special dietary requirements can be met upon request. VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED TO HELP EXPAND OUR PROGRAM:

Volunteers are the heart of the program. Volunteers are Drivers who contribute their time and use of their vehicle, Helpers who visit briefly as they deliver the meals at the door, and Kitchen Helpers who aid our staff in meal preparation and packaging. Individuals are welcome as volunteers. Also, relatives or friends who wish to work together can sign up as delivery teams. Teams of two – a driver and a helper – may deliver once a week, once every two weeks, or may prefer to be called when needed. Meals on Wheels is financed through payments from recipients, donations from individuals and groups, and United Way funding. Donations are gratefully accepted and used to expand the service so that the needs of more of our participants can be met. We are a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization committed to fostering independence and quality of life by providing affordable nutrition services.

Our Story

Program Background

New Dawn Meals on Wheels is a non-profit, volunteer-driven program. The program is committed to fostering independence and quality of life by providing affordable nutrition services. Each year, New Dawn Meals on Wheels provides approximately 12,000 hot and nutritious meals to people in our community who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Our meals are prepared in A Better Bite Community Kitchen by qualified staff and volunteers under the management of a registered dietitian and all meals delivered to the doorsteps by a team of friendly and dedicated volunteers.

In Cape Breton, as more and more families leave the island for work, community members, volunteers and organizations like Meals on Wheels find themselves stepping in to provide the support services that enable our loved ones to live happy, healthy and independent lives in their own homes.
