The pigs are approving their first load of LOOP food rescue, compliments of North Sydney Superstore.

We are delighted to be part of this amazing opportunity to lower food waste by feeding our animals with expired food that would otherwise go in the trash. The organization of the Loop program is very impressive with comprehensive training and they answered all of my many questions.

Looking forward to many more pounds of rescued food put into good use!

The grass has been growing well this year but we still need to be careful with how we manage it.
Because we have the most cows we ever had, rotational grazing has allowed us to have better grass growth.

The girls will be happy that we got rid of 2 of our biggest bulls though because they turn into bullies in the herd. Yes, that’s probably where the term came from 😂…

Sequestering carbon into the ground one cow at a time 💪

The things you don’t want to talk about…

We finally sent our chickens to the butcher this week… 2 weeks later than we should have.

These chickens have been the most active chicken we’ve ever had, and we’ve been raising chickens for 16 years.
But we knew something was wrong. They were not growing at the rate they should have been, and they were foraging way beyond their fenced area. They went into our garden where they ate our beet greens.
Turns out the expensive nonGMO feed we buy for them didn’t have the proper protein content in it. We knew it was something that happened last year so we tested the feed to make sure. And of course it was indeed too low in protein.

Now because they were going out of the fence and roaming too far out (even though we have a livestock guardian dog with them), we realized when it was time to catch them that we were short 88 chickens out of 440.
We had been feeding the wildlife (likely coyotes) for a while and didn’t even know it. They don’t leave anything behind, no feather, no blood, nothing. We’re still unsure where these missing chickens went.

So now we have to invest into stronger fences and extra supplementation for our next batch of chickens. Because we are still raising them even though the cards are stacked against us. We don’t have another option for feed, and the coyotes are likely to stick around.

This is a problem that other farmers are also facing, so please support your local farmer.
These chickens will be for sale and will still be extra nutritious (beet greens fed chickens, they also had access to a lot of bugs and grass).
They are available at the Sydney Public Market every Saturday and on the Cape Breton Food Hub.

We are talking with the feed company but are not expecting anything from them. We will have to test every batch of feed we receive (and pay for the test) and supplement according to the results.

Farming is hard enough and it is only getting harder.

Big Learning curve today for these babies. Learning how to take cover when it rains a lot… so that they don’t get cold and die on us once in the field.

These chickens this year have had a strong survival instinct, going much further out (and through the fences) to forage. But they’ve also been growing much slower, so our first batch won’t be ready until August 8, which is 2 weeks longer than normal.

It’s always about compromises…

What do you do when you’re a farmer in July?

You work after coming home from work… at least this was more fun than my usual tasks of planting and watering and harvesting… oh wait! I still have to harvest too 😂
