Itās all a balancing act
Every year itās a new game of curating the āgoldilocksā of grass for the chickens. Not too long, not too short. Itās all a balancing actāļø
Every year itās a new game of curating the āgoldilocksā of grass for the chickensš©š¼āš³. Not too long, not too short, but just the right length
Too long and the chickens will trample more than they eat, and their manure will just sit on top of the grass instead of getting down to the dirt.š¾
Too short and there isnāt much left for them to snack on, and their manure (high in nitrogen) runs the risk of āburningā the grass thatās left, making it tough for the grass to bounce back
The perfect length grass means that enough soil is bare for the manure to pe*****te without burning, and is comfortable for the chickens to walk and snack on. This perfect length grass takes some finesse to get rightšš¼
Weāve discovered the same is true for ourselves
We love this farm life but just like the chickens manure can burn the grass when itās too short, if we burn the candle from both ends keeping busy from sunup to sundown, we can get āburned outā from too much of a good thing, and it can take a while before weāre able to bounce back.
And just like managing the pastures is a balancing act, having a good work-life-farm balance is important to make sure we get enough rest between periods of busy-ness on the farm (especially hay daysš)
We get so much joy doing life on the farm but if thereās anything this farm has taught us, itās the importance of healthy balance. On the farm, and in our day to day livesš¤
