** CALLING ALL CANADIAN ARAUCANA OWNERS! **

I am working on pulling together info to help try to get the Araucana breed listed on the Heritage Livestock Canada poultry list. In order to do so, I will need to get some information on the number of Araucanas here in Canada, as well as how long you have had the breed. If you own any purebred Araucana chickens (Bantam or Large fowl), please reach out to me with that info if you can! (You can message me at Angelic Araucanas ).

The Livestock Conservancy in the US has recently added them to their list as “Critical”, and i’d like to help get them added to our list here in Canada as well.

Having Araucanas listed on the Heritage Livestock Canada poultry list, will help to raise awareness about this amazing breed, and hopefully help to gain interest, to further increase their numbers here.

Alright guys... I need you all to talk me out of doing something crazy ... Though I feel like you guys may just be enablers 🤣🤣

I went to collect eggs today, and this egg literally fell out of the hen, into my hand (all warm and still wet 😆). It is from one of the pure black hens that I didn't get to hatch from this year. She is tufted, and fully rumpless. She is with the rooster I didn't get to hatch from this year as well. He has the most beautiful, nicely shaded blue, and is fully rumpless as well. It has the potential to hatch out the most beautiful offspring of the year... And I currently have a broody hen... Do you see where I am going with this 🤣😅

I am REALLY considering putting it under that broody hen lol. It is only one egg though. I don't really want just one chick without a buddy... I am not home tomorrow, but I just may stalk the nest boxes Thursday and Friday when I am home, so see if I can get another. If I do .. I may just give them to my broody hen and see what happens 😬 I feel like I need to be talked out of this, as it is super late in the season... Though, the hen will raise it and do all the work sooooo...... 🤣🤣

These 3 are officially this year's "keepers" from the hatching season! While it was a great year for tufts, the rooster I used had a little tail feather hiding, and produced primarily offspring with a few tail feathers. That being said, each of these birds has one or 2 tail feathers, and will need to be paired with fully rumpless mates next season so I can try to work that out. The years I took off, really set my flock back, So I imagine it will take a few years to help get them back on track. Here's the reasoning as to why I have decided to keep these 3:

Tufted splash hen - This one is pretty well self explanatory... just look at those tufts!! 😍 I didn't really want a splash hen, let alone one with 2 tiny tail feathers, but those beautiful tufts will help me to get the nice tufts that I need back into my flock. While my flock is mainly tufted, most have tiny tufts, so she should help to improve that.

Clean faced Blue hen - I almost didn't keep this one, as the lack of tufts, and her one tiny tail feather are the opposite of what I want in my flock. HOWEVER.. her color is just stunning! Most of my hens are more of a paler, washed out blue, where she has that dark, vibrant blue, with beautiful dark shading, which gets me closer to the blue I am looking for in my flock. Paired with the black cockerel I am keeping, her offspring will be stunning 😍

Tufted black cockerel - He has beautiful tufts, and beautiful leakage free black coloring. He has a few small tail feathers, but I really need a black cockerel again. My flock is turning primarily blue and splash, which is NOT what I want. As much as I loved Chonk (our old splash rooster), using him last year (because he was all I had after taking a few years off, then losing my main black rooster), really set my flock back color wise. This guy, with his tufts, and beautiful black color, will help me to get my tufts and color back on track next season. Once I get my coloring and tufting back on track next season, the following year will be to work on the rumplessness again, as that is the easier trait to get back on track.

I am hoping that over the next 2 years, my flock will be back on track, and better than ever! 🩵 While I am working on the flock, I will not have hatching eggs available. (With the exception of the 2 customers I need to send replacements to in the spring).

Q: Which heritage breed lays naturally blue eggs?

A: The Araucana chicken is known for laying naturally blue eggs. Unlike white or brown eggs, the blue color extends all the way through the shell. Listed as Critical on the Conservation Priority List, this unique heritage breed still needs conservation support.

Who has been following us long enough to remember Lanny? For those who don't know who Lanny is, he was one of our first Araucana roosters. He was gorgeous, and had the biggest tufts of any Araucana we have ever had... Until now! Looking back at Lanny's baby photos, and photos of when he was 2 months old (same age as our little hen this year), it appears that this year's hen's tufts are bigger!! I can wait to watch her grow out 🥰 I have also included some photos of Lanny when he was more mature, just to give an idea of what I am expecting... But possibly even bigger 😍

** SOLD **
This handsome little guy is looking for a new home! He can't stay here, as he has 3 strikes against him (clean faced, one tail feather, and red color leakage), but he is an absolute sweetheart (The sweetest bird hatched all year!), so I can't bear to cull him. He would make a lovely addition to a pet flock, or someone looking to start a colored egger project. He is purebred Araucana, and carries beautiful blue egg genes 💙 He is Splash colored (with a bit of red leakage). Hatched May 8th.

Well, I think I got lucky!! While all of it's brothers are growing saddle feathers and pointed hackles, the one with the biggest tufts has not! 😍 I am thinking it's a little lady, based on appearance (comb is smaller and less red, and no pointed saddles or hackles), but I won't say 100% for sure yet, as her attitude screams rooster lol. Though, it certainly wouldn't be the first Araucana hen with attitude, that's for sure! Afterall, all the blue /splash birds do carry Rumpless Stiltskin's sassy genes 🤣

Included is a photo of one of the young fellows we will be keeping this year (the black one). He is the same age, and you can definitely see the difference in comb.

While all our tufted birds this year have some tail feathers, these 2 had the smallest / fewest. They will both be kept this year, unless the splash turns out to be a late blooming rooster lol.

This year has shown me that the few years I took off from breeding while I was Ill, set my flock back more than I thought. This year's results have not been what I had hoped they would be. I will need to go back to the drawing board for next year. While this year's tufts were beautiful, there were more birds with tail feathers than I'd like to see.

Next season will be focused on full rumplessness first, color second, and tufts last. I understand that tufts are one of the main traits that make this breed so special, but those tufts need to have a quality base. Tufts on tailed, leaky colored birds, are not what I want. I'd like to get my base (rumplessness and color) better, before I work on tufts again.

My main rooster for next season will likely be blue, and clean faced, but fully rumpless (unless the fully rumpless black bird from this season grows into a cockerel, then he may be used instead, as black is always most ideal). He will be paired with only blue and black hens, that are fully rumpless as well. Some of those hens are clean faced, and some are tufted. Since the roosters influence the tufts more than the hens, that means there will be less chance for tufts, but should help get some nicely colored, and fully rumpless birds to move forward with the following season. The hope for next season is to produce a quality, fully rumpless, nicely colored, hopefully somewhat tufted rooster for the following season. I will still be keeping a tufted boy from this year's grow outs, but I am unsure if he will be used next season, or just kept as a back up, as he has some tail feathers. I may pair him with some fully rumpless hens, just to see what he produces.

All in all, this season was a bit of a disappointment, so I will be focusing on my flock's needs next year. With all the tail feathers this year, I don't think I will have trios available this summer as originally planned either. I will need to keep any fully rumpless birds from this year, to move forward with next season, so I will only have birds with tail feathers available this summer/fall.
