Highlights from mid August include Emily's birthday, tall beans and sunflowers, and enormous purple vegetables like eggplants and a 3 lb beet (which unfortunately got nibbled on by voles). Early signs of fall approaching include vole activity, the arrival of Canada geese, and planting greens in the greenhouse. As the days get shorter our harvest list focuses more on roots and fruiting crops than greens, and we will soon be harvesting our last microgreens and arugula for the year.

We are still looking for one or two staff to join for the fall, so please spread the word or reach out if you're interested! If we want local food security, someone has to let their children grow up to be farmers.

See you at the Skeena Valley Farmers Market !

What are you up to this fall? Wanna help bring in the final harvests and shut down the farm for the season? As our crew members all head back to various schools, we're looking for one full-time or multiple part-time staff to work from roughly late August until mid October.

Starting wage is $18.50/hr plus lots of veggies, and if you're looking for part-time work we can typically accomodate your scheduling needs as long as you can commit to at least 1-2 days/week. At this time of year we are primarily harvesting, washing, and packaging produce, although there will also be some weeding, trellising, pruning, deconstructing greenhouses, and putting away supplies for winter storage.

Please spread the word and reach out if you're interested!

It rained a lot this week (and it may still be raining), and it's Riverboat Days, but it's also August and there are all kinds of delicious things to enjoy! Come on down to the market before or after the parade, we're here until 2!

Every small business owner knows the value of a good employee, and as a farmer on rented land, we got pretty lucky that a member of the landowners' family wanted to work with vegetables. Emily started working with us while she was still in high school, and this season is her 5th as an official employee. Some years have been full time, others more casual, and we're very grateful when she can save us a trip to the farm by closing greenhouses and watering seedlings on evenings and weekends.

This year she's full time until the fall when she starts her university degree in sciences. We'll miss her reliable work ethic, unique skills like stitching greenhouse doors back together, and enthusiasm for vegetables, but we know she'll be an engaged and intelligent student. Outside of farming and education, she's also an incredible artist!

The lettuce photo is from a previous season, but we have similar-sized heads on special tomorrow alongside a bit of salad mix and a lot of arugula. Come to the market to get fresh, safe, clean greens, as well as cucumbers, carrots, and other treats as we approach peak season.

Lastly, with Emily and other staff heading back to school in a month, we are looking for 1-2 staff to start in August and work into October. Please reach out if you're interested!

The farm wouldn't be what it is today without Carol-Ann. Also known as CAB, you may recognize her from the market, but she's done everything it takes to get those veggies to your table, from planting to picking weeds to post-harvest processing. CAB and Cam have been farming together since 2022, but her farming journey started in 2021 at the KPU Richmond Farm School.

Her role on the farm over the years has fluctuated as she balances post-secondary education and multiple other jobs, but she has always played a key role in decision making, and supported Cam in countless ways on and off the farm. This year she's also starting on a long-held dream of flower farming at the home half-acre, and finding time to knit, run, and hang out with canine companions Ollie and Rayne.

Working all week and getting up early for market on Saturday can be exhausting, but CAB puts on an Oscar-worthy performance and greets customers with a smile every time. She's away for the next couple weeks and her presence will be missed (at the market, farm, and home!), and we can't wait for her to be back. Thanks for all your hard work CAB!

Dunno if you noticed, but it was hot last week - and that's good news for our cucumbers! They jumped from a trickle to a heavy haul in a matter of days, so come by the market for some mini snackers and crunchy slicers. We are not growing pickling cucumbers this year (sorry/not sorry) but you can definitely slice and quick-pickle these varieties too.

Other crops coming online this week include basil and green onions, and peas aren't far behind! Weekly Harvest Shares are underway and you can also find our produce at Skeena Valley Meats. Happy official beginning of summer!
