Last salad mix of the season is coming to market tomorrow, though we will have spinach a bit longer. Managed to mow some cover crops and disc a couple fields this week to knock back the w**ds between rain and before winter. Also we have infinite kale, ha.

Right now the limitation is labour hours - I wouldn't say there's food rotting in the fields, but we definitely aren't maxing out our sales potential right now. Labour shortage is an issue across all industries these days. If you wanna volunteer or do some casual work, gimme a shout!

Peppers are poppin' and spinach is back! Eggplants are winding down soon but still lots of things to choose from tomorrow at the market.

I also thought I'd post a reality check photo of our final green onion planting. Social media is great at showing the best of the best, but don't worry fellow gardeners, we also have plantings on the farm that fail or get overtaken by w**ds. The ends of this bed are still producing a few bunches of "grons" per week, but the middle dried out in a heat wave, or didn't get enough fertilizer, or had too much w**d competition, or got hit by pests, or something. Love and learn.

We'll be at market for about 3 more weeks, see ya there!

Small crew this week so some crops will have to wait until next week to be harvested, but the tunnels are still producing and the doggos can confirm that the cucumbers still taste good! See you at the market tomorrow

Lemme tell ya about a couple homies: the first was born three years after me and may have been super annoying until we were adults, as many younger brothers are. But now we're homies, he works in the soil science and climate policy side of agriculture, and he's getting married this weekend so I'm out of town! The photo is from a visit back in 2019 while we were goofing around in the wash station. Congrats to Gord and Sophie on tying the knot!

The second homie is Jin, who has jumped in to run the farm multiple times over the past couple years, including harvesting today with Elaine and selling at market tomorrow with Sammie! Please be aware that product availability tomorrow will be limited, and Jin is doing us a huge solid by setting up at market.

In my last post I also meant to give shout outs to all the people that have helped at the farm this year, which is a pretty long list. In addition to those mentioned above, and Carol-Ann and Emily who you may have met, thank you to Justice, Juliette, Mikaela, Terry, Diana, Mariah, Abhi, Elaine, and everyone who has supported the farm this season in various ways!

Highlights from mid August include Emily's birthday, tall beans and sunflowers, and enormous purple vegetables like eggplants and a 3 lb beet (which unfortunately got nibbled on by voles). Early signs of fall approaching include vole activity, the arrival of Canada geese, and planting greens in the greenhouse. As the days get shorter our harvest list focuses more on roots and fruiting crops than greens, and we will soon be harvesting our last microgreens and arugula for the year.

We are still looking for one or two staff to join for the fall, so please spread the word or reach out if you're interested! If we want local food security, someone has to let their children grow up to be farmers.

What are you up to this fall? Wanna help bring in the final harvests and shut down the farm for the season? As our crew members all head back to various schools, we're looking for one full-time or multiple part-time staff to work from roughly late August until mid October.

Starting wage is $18.50/hr plus lots of veggies, and if you're looking for part-time work we can typically accomodate your scheduling needs as long as you can commit to at least 1-2 days/week. At this time of year we are primarily harvesting, washing, and packaging produce, although there will also be some w**ding, trellising, pruning, deconstructing greenhouses, and putting away supplies for winter storage.
