Manitoba’s most northerly bison farm
Welcome to Manitoba, North of 53! From long summer days to sharp cold winter nights, our little farm works to produce a wide variety of quality foods.
Round The Bend Farm is centred around a small herd of bison that are exclusively grass-fed. These impressive beasts are perfectly evolved for the climate and terrain of The Pas. Each year they calve out between 12 to 16 young’uns that will take 2 years to reach full size. They need no help from humans, other than to put out hay bales in the winter. In the summer our at-surface watering system pipes clean cold water out to the paddocks to fill drinking troughs while in the winter the bison are fine eating snow. They are so well-insulated and adapted to the climate that it needs to get well below minus 20 Celsius before they start to feel cold.
Once in a while a calf is abandoned by its mother. Usually when this happens it is because she birthed twins and can only support one. In such cases we have a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the baby bison as we bring it in to the farmyard and bottle feed it over the summer until it is old enough to graze. A ‘bottle baby’ bison is a big attraction as they become quite comfortable with humans and will allow themselves to be touched. It is amazing what thick and soft coats they have!
