We had a one day milk test last week for our first time, right on time for yet another winter snow storm to roll in. The doe’s are fed outside and so as such didn’t come out to eat as much…and in turn production was also a little lower than normal unfortunately. However - happy to be more familiar with the process now and also have a little data on butterfat & protein percentage. I do not yet have the score from the CGS, however lab results from the milk samples are as follow…
❄️Espresso (lamancha)
💫 BF 3.46 Protein 3.06
❄️ Juniper
💫 BF 5.27 Protein 3.63
❄️ Taunt
💫 BF 5.08 Protein 4.16
❄️ Ginger
💫 BF 5.08 Protein 3.60
❄️ Lilac
💫 BF 4.81 Protein 3.72
❄️ Keepsake
💫 BF 5.28 Protein 3.94
❄️ Edelweiss
💫 BF 5.20 Protein 4.08
Chloe unfortunately wasn’t tested as she came down with mastitis.
It was a fun experience but in my opinion a one day milk test is such a small picture in the grand scheme. It’s encouraged me to start recording weights regularly during lactation and with being fairly close to the lactanet lab myself…test for bf/protein from time to time for more value - CGS approved or not 🙂. I have been getting great yield when making cheese both last year and this year so seeing the butterfat/protein percentages isn’t entirely surprising to me.
