🕯️ Gone. But Never Forgotten.

For decades, this building in Thunder Bay housed The Hoito, perhaps the oldest co‑operatively owned and operated restaurant in Canada. And home of the infamous Hoito Finnish Pancakes!!

The Finnish Labour Temple: Built in 1910 by the Finnish Building Company Limited using the design of C W Wheeler, this unique building features the central polygonal tower supported by columns, the domed glassed-in cupola and two-sided oriel windows on the façade. Intended as a community meeting place, it originally housed a theatre, a library and a reading room.

In 1918 Finnish bush workers at a logging camp outside Nipigon pooled fifty‑nine “Comrade loans” of $5 each to hire A.T. Hill as manager and open a restaurant that truly belonged to the people it fed.

The building is gone, but the story of what those workers built together remains part of Thunder Bay’s heart and history. We'll continue to cherish the memories.

Inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her orange shirt taken away on her first day at Indian residential school, we uplift the voices of Survivors and invite all people in Canada to walk the path of truth & reconciliation together.

The Orange Shirt Society was established in 2015 to:

Support Indian residential school reconciliation

Create awareness of the individual, family, and community intergenerational impacts of Indian residential schools through Orange Shirt Society activities

Create awareness of the concept of “Every Child Matters”
