LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOO!

There’s just something about moving cows to fresh grass that never gets old.

Even if they’ve only been in an area for a day or two, as soon as they figure out we’re moving them again, the excitement kicks in and they’re off 😂

Fresh grass just hits different.

But why boys why!??? 😵‍💫

There was a big patch of burdock in the field so Jay went to cut it down and get rid of it SO the cattle wouldn’t get into it. Unfortunately, the tractor broke down after he had cut it all down and piled it together, so he went off to the local store to pick up a piece he needed to fix it and when he came back all the boys were literally frolicking in the mound of burdock 🫠

We just had all of my supplies delivered so I can start doing dialysis at home soon. And while I’m genuinely excited to have a little more freedom and to be able to do it myself, in my own home, seeing all of those boxes show up today hit me a lot harder than I expected.

I think sometimes I’ve been so focused on staying positive and waiting for this pass so life can start to feel normal again, but the reality is slowly hitting me that this is my actual new normal. Seeing a month worth of dialysis supplies stacked in our home made everything feel very real when just a few months ago I still thought I’d be off dialysis before we got to this point. It’s so hard to wrap my head around the fact that this is my life now.

I haven’t shared a huge amount of what I’ve been going through, but the truth of the matter is, this is my reality. And as grateful as I am to start dialysis at home, there’s a lot of grief that comes with accepting that this is something I have to do at all.

I mean we love a good movie night still, but these are the kind of childhood memories I hope they carry with them forever.

When we first started telling people about our Ranch - we got a lot of ‘who are you?’ with many people not really believing that we were starting a Ranch. Heck, I didn’t really believe it myself! But here we are 😁

Leading us to… OUR STORY (Part Four): From a few cows, to a full on Ranch.

Continuing from last post where we had no idea how to raise cows…

We really didn’t have a clue 😂 BUT now that we had the cows and I surprisingly LOVED them - I was whole heartedly invested and began to join Jay in the deep dive research. I really never paid attention to the different ways of raising cattle prior to this, but the more we read about regenerative agriculture, the more drawn we were to it. A big portion of our land was old farmland 50+ years ago that had since been overtaken by a lot of unusable scrubland. What we were learning through our research was that, if grazed properly, our cows could help us regenerate this soil, increase biodiversity and invigorate wildlife habitats while turning much of the scrub bush into productive land again - THUS, creating a net-positive return on the earth. At this point, we were determined that if we were going to raise cows for our family we had do it in a way that was not only beneficial for us and our cows, but also beneficial for our land as well!

Jay started planning out the different pastures we could develop and fence in, but quickly halted when pricing it all out. In order to fence in more of our land and implement proper grazing strategies, we were going to need a whole lot more money. We began brainstorming ways to help us properly implement rotational grazing and decided our best option would be to create a business plan so we could apply for a loan.

And so, a business plan we began and it went something like this:

~ Me to Jay when I first started working on the business plan: Okay, so I’m only doing this plan to help us apply for a loan, we’re not actually starting a business…we’re just going to sell our meat to friends and family.

~ Me to Jay partway through working on the business plan: Hmmm, it's really hard to make money with cows (it's true), should
we maybe get some pigs too? They could also actually really help us clear land.
Jay: I thought we weren't actually starting a business, so what does it matter if we're not making much money off the cows.
Me: Right. I'm just saying, getting pigs would make our business plan look much better.
~ Me to Jay by the time we're finishing up the business plan: We need to start this Ranch.
Jay: That was the plan the whole time (😂 that's how it went. As we dove further into the business plan the thought of starting an actual Ranch all the sudden didn't seem so crazy. But even more so than that, through the research, we became increasingly aware of the gaps in the industry and a fire began burning in our souls. Our desire to provide high quality meat to our family, slowly turned into a passion and excitement to provide others with nutrient-dense food they could trust and know exactlv where it came from "

And so, we re-vamped the business plan to include some woolly pigs, added some more Highlands to the fold, changed some goals and projections, came up with a name - and put it into action!
And there you have it - our slow spiral into ranching! We got our first cows over 2 years ago now and we haven't actually sold any meat yet, but it's coming guys - and we're excited!! It's amazing looking back on how one door opening, led to so many other doors opening - taking us to where we needed to be one door at a time. It's not by chance that we are here now, we are meant to be here and we couldn't imagine our lives anywhere else. It's been a crazy amount of work and there's still loads to learn, but the rewards -- healthy food, healthy land, and healthy families -- will keep us going for years to come.
Thanks for following along this LONG story of ours and joining us in this crazy adventure we call life!

If you haven’t noticed yet, this 👆 is literally my response to every big thing Jay suggests 😂 including, OUR STORY (Part Three): Cows.

Continuing on from last post - we spent the next couple of years embracing the homestead life. We dove into learning how to grow our own food and started butchering wild meat for our freezer. We had to harvest wood to keep us warm in the winter and we began canning all the goods. It was a huge learning curve, but the further we got into it, the more we appreciated knowing where our food came from and reaping the benefits of hard work was almost euphoric for us. Learning to live off the land and slowly becoming more self-sufficient slowly turned from an enjoyment into a passion.

*Cue in cows.

At some point in there, Jay suggested that we should get some cows. At first I just thought it was one of Jay’s fleeting ideas (he’s always brewing up one thing or another) and I didn’t take him all that serious. BUT he just wouldn’t let this idea ago.

Now, before I move forward with this story I feel I need to give you a quick back story on Jay. Jason rarely ever just ‘really likes’ things. He either dislikes it, likes it… orrrr he is OBSESSED. I’m talking he doesn’t just love Tolkien, and therefore, reads and re-reads his books, for example. Nope! I’m talking he dives into the history of EACH and EVERY character and watches all the YouTube videos about it until his brain could possibly not soak in any more information about it and then he moves on to his next obsession - all while still holding on to that Tolkien love 😁. It’s a beautiful thing really.

UNTIL this obsession became cows. It felt like he went from 0 to 100 in literal nights and before I knew it, he wouldn’t stop talking about cows!

*Cue in my freak out.

“Cows!? You really want to add more animals to our lives (at this point we already had a pack of sled dogs) - we’ll never be able to leave the property then!” Also, to be completely honest, I was worried about losing my ski trails to all the fencing 🙈

But true to Jason's style, my lil' freak out didn't stop him. He dove further and further into his cattle research and then strategically filled my brain with all this cow love.
I kept brushing it off, secretly hoping something else would come up and he'd forget all about ever wanting cows. But then, he started talking about this breed called Highlands and my interest peaked slightly. I hadn't really heard of this breed before and to be frank, had no idea that different breeds of cows had different things to offer.
Highlands seemed to have SO much to offer and all of the sudden they started to really make sense to me for our homestead and our goal of becoming more self-sufficient.
Highlands were hardy cows that didn't need much in terms of shelter or assistance with birthing. They were a smaller breed, but packed full of nutrients - known to be lower in fat and cholesterol with higher levels of protein, iron, vitamin E and Omega - 3 and -6.
On top of that, they did extremely well on grass-fed diets, something we valued as a family.

It took over a year, but by the summer of 2019 (with the promise from Jay that we wouldn't fence in all our ski trails) I was was finally convinced that we could at least give it a go. Best case scenario - we would be raising high quality beef for our family, using methods we value and as naturally as possible, while knowing exactly what went into that meat (and what didn't whereas, the worst case scenario was that it didn't work out and we could just sell them off.
And so, our first 9 cows and one bull were purchased (me, of course, not knowing at the time that 10 cows was not considered a small number for a homestead) AND THEN we
proceeded to build a fence for them.
Sure enough, as soon as we got those cows, I was hooked. Who knew I loved cows so much!? I sure didn't! They truly were such little majestic beasts with a calming energy. I think I enjoyed them even more than Jay did lol.

Part Four (final part) up next!
