PRT 3! TEN YEARS AGO…

With the 10 year anniversary of our first sale coming up this October I’ve been looking back at how this all began! When we left off (PRT 1 and 2 are linked in our Instagram highlights) we were researching how to formalize our business and in the meantime, we gave away hundreds of minis to gather feedback. We felt very motivated by what we heard and after much discussion we both invested 5 thousand dollars towards our first round of labels, first order of 6oz bottles, a few kitchen items and a large order of ingredients.

So during August and Sept 2016, we were busy tackling the lingering issues with scaling up our cooking process, submitting our product for testing, legitimizing our business to go to retail, finalizing the labels, and working our other jobs.

We were cooking out of Tomlin on Sundays when it was closed and the first few rounds of “large scale” batches were flops. It’s funny looking back at this time because large scale cooking was just cooking in a big pot instead of a little pot, but trying to get the sauce cooked safely without a commercial kettle was easier said than done. Some batches turned dark brown, burned on the bottom, tasted wrong, etc. We worked through some frustrations but It was a very exciting chapter, knowing that as soon as we nailed the process it would be time to take a huge leap of faith and negotiate our first retail partnership!

(Since that day 10 years ago when we pooled our 10k together, we haven’t taken on any outside investors and still own 100 percent of Heartbeat as a couple, which is one of the many things we are excited to celebrate at the 10 year mark in Oct ♥️)

The Fourth Annual Heartbeat Pepper Eating Contest is in the books!! 🌶️
