Anyone who knows my taste in alcohol, knows I'm a huge fan of Soju.

Typically popular in Korea, it is much like half strength vodka with a bit of sweetness and less 'kick'. For quite some time now the LCBO near my house has typically only stocked one brand, (which is an awesome brand), but this week I found something new.

Moon Soju

This is the first Canadian distilled Soju I recall coming across, (I did not know this when i purchased it). It is smoother than the Korean brands I have tried and a touch sweeter. What drew me to it initially were two things: What I think is awesome packaging, and the reasonable price point. Upon visiting their website I see they have won six medals, including 'best in show'. As I sit here playing guitar and having my first glass on a Sunday afternoon, I can say this does not disappoint. It fills the insides with a nice warm feeling, perfect for a February winter day, and at 18.6% ABV, I can have a couple glasses before I get tipsy.

Moon Soju is a winner in my book. I will definitely have a couple bottles of this on hand in my liquor cabinet.

Cheap(ish) Wine Review

Apothic Merlot

Where to start... Well, this one is from California, and California has some pretty righteous wines and this one does not disappoint. Please understand, most of the wine I drink probably come from vineyards owned by old Europeans and South Americans named something like Luigi, Francois, or Carlos. In my mind I think California wine makers are named Chad, Brittney, or Brett so I'm usually somewhat sceptical despite them consistently winning quality product awards.

This Apothic is smooth and but not very flavorful with almost no bite. The label says it has hints of blackberry and vanilla, but I can't taste that at all (no surprise there). I do taste my stress from going to the mall earlier today fading into obscurity though, and that is a metric f**k ton better than blackberries which I can buy at the grocery store. To be honest, I tend to enjoy wines with a little more bite, but I would expect this sort of thing from California. It is afterall the land of liberals, snowflakes, and where a wine with a bite might hurt feelings and make people seek therapy. Still, not a bad wine though especially if you like mellow s**t like Kenny G, hippie stoner girls, and that sort of shizzle.

It smells a bit funky too. Not like bad funky or anything, just funky. Earthy funky maybe?

My overall thoughts are this... You're probably going to enjoy it that night, but you'll also have some regrets in the morning, much like trying to find a relationship in a strip club. It comes on smooth, but it's gonna leave you with a big headache after the fact. Thanks Chad. Still, nothing some hot yoga and a kale smoothie won't fix right up.

Cool label too.

Casillero del Diablo Reserva - Devil's Collection

Priced at $14.95 this red is 'el good dealo'.

The wine is from Argentina and is a mix of Syrah, Cabaret, Merlot & other s**t. Now they don't say what the other wines are, but I'm pretty sure it's small pieces of Lucifer or Satan because after a couple glasses of this Devil's nectar I'm thinking impure thoughts & I want to do some really un-christian things to my girlfriend.

The wine itself is full bodied, and the back of the label says it has hints of ripe fruit, plum, black cherry, and a hint of dark chocolate. I have to take their word for it, I can't taste any of these things, but I do taste me getting more h***y with every glass.

It says it goes well with BBQ, but perhaps it might pair better with massage oil, a blindfold, and some handcuffs. You can be the judge of that.

I give this wine two thumbs and one p***s up.

Cheap wine review...

Côtes-du-Rhône Réserve Les Dauphins

This is a mix of two wines, both of which I'm not too familiar with by themselves, but mixed together it's actually kinda f**kin' decent. The screw top is a bonus, especially for a guy like me who often loses the corkscrew, so it's easy to pour a drink. That's a win for anyone.

It drinks easy, and is quite mellow so it might go to the belly a tad quick. That makes this is a good wine to get a buzz on before heading to the local pub if you wanted to save a couple bucks on overpriced drinks. Is it a quality wine? Kinda. Maybe. There are certainly far worse choices in the $13 range, but ya ain't gonna impress bi***es who wear sequin evening gowns and Swarovski dangly earrings a Tuesday night looking to meet a millionaire either.

The label is pretty f**king cool too. Reminds me of a circus. My girlfriend likes the label as well, so that makes it 'hottie approved'.

The downfall is that for some people, (meaning me), a bottle of this will give a headache akin to drinking a slushy too fast or advanced brain cancer. But since you'll have a bottle of wine in your belly it should be tolerable with a couple Advil.

I say give it a go.

Today's cheap but good wine review.

Oggi Botter Primitivo

Well, it comes from Italy and one thing Italians know is wine, and judging by the label this vineyard has been around for a fair bit. I mean Italians also know pasta, dried sausage, cannoli, and some other s**t like expensive cars, but since I don't have that available I'll talk about the wine. Pretty mellow for an Italian wine, but not mellow like something a white girl named Taylor would probably enjoy. As you can see the LCBO rates it a 95/100, which is like 40 points higher than I graded in highschool, but I still passed, so there is that going for it. Also it comes glued inside a paper bag so you'll blend right in if you're drinking it with the hobos, (did I say it is at a price point they can afford too). Now you're obviously not gonna pass this off as a quality wine to some Instagram influencer who bangs athletes in the washroom of some trendy club, but your average middle age cougar with four kids from four different men will probably think it's swell. With a bit of charm and luck, by the second bottle you might even get a handy from her in the backseat of your beat up Civic.

All in all a pretty good value for 10 bucks.
