📣 New Producer Alert: Introducing Blue Gables Acres!

💙 Located in Paris, Ontario, Delano and Kimmy Osmond own and operate Blue Gables Acres - a farm and winery specializing in growing Haskap berries. For years Kimmy has been experimenting with foraging, preserving, and wine-making from local plants and fruit by bringing in her Metis heritage to learn more about Indigenous plants and their health benefits.

💙 These berries are grown without the use of chemicals, and are frozen at peak freshness. But what do Haskap berries actually taste like? Imagine eating blueberries and raspberries smashed together, with a splash of zing! Their unique and wonderful flavour can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes - so get creative!

💙 Delano and Kimmy - along with their family and friends - have worked tirelessly to get the 5 acres of Haskap berries planted and manicured by hand to ensure an excellent quality of fruit. Blue Gables Acres is not an organic farm, but they keep it as clean as possible by applying organic methods to ensure their plants are healthy, all while minimizing intervention on the land.

📣 LOCAL FOOD IS BEST!

🚜 For the past few months our 'Why Local' series has explored just some of the many reasons why buying and eating local food is better for you, your community and the planet. From improving the nutrition and quality of food, through to strengthening local economies and protecting farmland, the benefits are truly endless.

💚 When you choose to buy local, you’re making a statement about the kind of food future you want for yourself, your family, and generations to come.

🌱 Building a thriving, resilient food economy here in Ontario is not easy work, but people like you, and the community that we’ve created along the way makes it all worth it.

🤝 Thank you for your support as we continue to champion a better, fairer and tastier food future.

🧬 Part 6: LOCAL FOOD SUPPORTS GENETIC DIVERSITY!

🚫 Global food systems rely on selecting varieties of plants that are chosen not for taste or nutrition, but for uniformity, high yields, and shelf-stability. Genetic diversity in crops is in serious decline, which makes them more vulnerable to pests, diseases and climate change.

👩‍🌾 Local farms often grow a variety of different foods, making for a longer harvest season and producing a range of vibrant colours and flavours as a result. Buying delicious food from your local farmers is a way you can enjoy and ensure the future of more diverse crops, ones that are resilient, nutritious, and a whole lot tastier.

🚚 This is just one of the incredible benefits of purchasing locally, but sometimes the toughest part is figuring out how to do it. That’s where we step in! Say hello to 100km Foods Next-Day Delivery!
