Your colour didn't fade - your liquid did.

Same shade, same amount, two very different bowls. Liquid colour thins whatever it touches, so you keep adding while your icing keeps losing its body. Gel colours are highly concentrated - they colour buttercream, icing, dough and fondant without breaking down their consistency.
