In 2012, Meal Garden began with a clear goal: help busy families eat better through flexible, realistic meal planning. The first version brought together home cooking, takeout, leftovers, and nutrition data—into one flexible system built for real life. Over time, we realized the best way to achieve our mission was by empowering the professionals already doing the work. Today, Meal Garden is built

for nutrition practitioners—helping them create, share, and grow with personalized plans that actually fit their clients’ lives.

Goal-setting is one of the most evidence-supported components of effective nutrition counselling — and the quality of the goal matters.

SMART nutrition goals work because they:
🎯 Are Specific (not "eat healthier" but "add a vegetable to lunch 5x/week")
📊 Are Measurable — progress can be tracked
✅ Are Achievable — within the client's real life
🔗 Are Relevant to the client's own health values
📅 Are Time-bound — reviewed regularly

Combined with personalized meal planning, SMART goals lead to lasting behaviour change.

Meal Garden helps nutrition professionals track and support client progress every step of the way. 🌿

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most widespread and underdiagnosed nutritional issues globally — with far-reaching health consequences.

Research links adequate vitamin D to:
🛡️ Stronger immune function and reduced infection risk
🦴 Bone density and fracture prevention
🧠 Reduced risk of depression and cognitive decline
🫀 Lower cardiovascular risk

Dietary sources are limited: fatty fish, egg yolks, fortified dairy and plant milks. Sunlight synthesis is often insufficient, especially in northern latitudes.

RDA: 600–800 IU/day, but many researchers suggest 1,000–2,000 IU is optimal.

Always test before supplementing — your dietitian can guide this. 🌿

Nutrition labels are powerful tools — if you know how to read them.

Key things to look for:
📋 Ingredients list: items are in descending order by weight. If sugar (in any form) appears in the top 3, reconsider.
🔢 Serving size: all values are per serving, not per package.
🧂 Sodium: aim for < 600mg per serving for packaged meals.
🌾 Fibre: 4g+ per serving = good source; 6g+ = excellent source.
🚫 Added sugars: listed separately from total sugars — aim for < 10% of daily calories.

Teaching label literacy is one of the most empowering things a dietitian can do for a client. 🌿

Few dietary patterns have more rigorous scientific backing than the Mediterranean diet.

The landmark PREDIMED trial (7,447 participants) found a ~30% reduction in major cardiovascular events among high-risk adults following a Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil or nuts.

Core components:
🫒 Abundant olive oil
🥦 Vegetables, legumes, whole grains at every meal
🐟 Fish 2–3×/week
🍷 Moderate red wine (optional)
🔴 Low red meat and processed food

It's not one food — it's a pattern. And patterns are what dietitians help clients build. 🌿

Mindful eating isn't a diet — it's a scientifically supported practice that improves dietary outcomes without restriction.

The research:
🧠 It takes ~20 minutes for satiety hormones (leptin, GLP-1) to signal fullness to the brain.
🍽️ Eating slowly and without distraction is associated with lower caloric intake and greater meal satisfaction.
📵 Screen-based eating (TV, phone) significantly increases intake and reduces satisfaction.

Practical tips:
✅ Put utensils down between bites
✅ Aim for 20+ minutes per meal
✅ Remove screens from the table

Integrating mindful eating into nutrition counselling leads to more sustainable outcomes. 🌿

Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body — yet it's one of the most commonly deficient nutrients in Western diets.

Signs of low magnesium:
😴 Fatigue and poor sleep
💆 Muscle cramps
😰 Increased anxiety
🫀 Irregular heartbeat

Best food sources:
Dark chocolate, pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach, black beans, avocado, whole grains.

RDA: 310–420mg/day depending on age and s*x.

A diet rich in whole, minimally processed foods is the best way to meet magnesium needs.

Build magnesium-rich meal plans for your clients with Meal Garden. 🌿

Iron deficiency is the world's most common nutritional deficiency — and how you eat iron-rich foods matters as much as how much you eat.

🔬 The science:
Non-heme iron (from plants) has 2–20% absorption rate vs. heme iron (from meat) at 15–35%.
Vitamin C dramatically enhances non-heme iron absorption.

✅ Pair: lentils + bell pepper, spinach + lemon, oatmeal + strawberries
❌ Avoid: tea, coffee, or calcium-rich foods with iron-rich meals

This is exactly why individualized nutritional guidance makes a real difference in client outcomes.

Meal Garden's recipe library makes building iron-optimized meals easy. 🌿

Glycemic Index (GI) gets all the attention — but Glycemic Load (GL) is far more clinically meaningful.

GI ranks foods on how fast they raise blood sugar. But GL accounts for the actual amount of carbohydrate in a serving — which is what truly matters.

Example: Watermelon has a high GI (72) but a low GL (4) because a serving contains very little carbohydrate.

Strategies to improve glycemic response:
✅ Pair carbohydrates with protein, fat, or fiber
✅ Choose whole grains over refined grains
✅ Eat vegetables before starchy foods (food order matters!)

Precision nutrition counselling starts with understanding these nuances. 🌿

📉 Improved glycemic control in type 2 diabetes
❤️ Reduced cardiovascular risk factors
🧠 Better long-term dietary adherence vs. self-directed approaches
⚖️ More sustainable weight management

Personalized nutrition care accounts for your unique health history, preferences, culture, and lifestyle — something no app or generic guide can do.

Chronic inflammation is at the root of most major chronic diseases — including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

The good news: diet is one of the most powerful tools to combat it.

Anti-inflammatory foods backed by research:
🫐 Berries & cherries (anthocyanins)
🐟 Fatty fish (EPA/DHA)
🫒 Extra virgin olive oil (oleocanthal)
🥬 Leafy greens (vitamin K, antioxidants)
🌰 Nuts & seeds (polyphenols)

Studies show Mediterranean-style eating can reduce CRP (a key inflammation marker) by up to 37%.

Help your clients build anti-inflammatory meals with Meal Garden. 🌿
