While we celebrate and indulge in delicious gluten-free food at Gluten Free Garage, we also want to ensure that it reaches people who are facing food insecurity. As a strict gluten-free diet is the only treatment for celiac, it is essential that people with this autoimmune disease have access to safe gluten-free food.
Gluten-free food is medicine for people with celiac disease.
According to Celiac Canada, the biggest challenge that people with celiac disease face after diagnosis is the cost incurred through following the medical nutrition therapy. In addition to rising food costs in general, executive director Melissa Secord says, “on top of this, gluten-free staples cost three to four times more than their regular counterparts, despite the growing demand for gluten free.”
With your donations to the food drive, together we will help stock the shelves of two local food banks with gluten-free essentials.
This year we are continuing to partner with The Beeton Cupboard, a food bank at St. Michael and All Angels Church on St. Clair West that’s been supporting the local community since the 1980s and has a dedicated area for gluten-free goods for clients who require it. “We strive to share whatever food comes in with careful consideration for dietary concerns, says lay pastor Jenni Feheley.
And we are introducing a new partner—the Fort York Food Bank—the busiest food bank in Toronto, currently serving more than 7,600 people per week…and the numbers are growing. executive director Julie Le Jeune knows firsthand about celiac disease. “My 14-year-old son has celiac, so I am extremely passionate about saving gluten-free food for those who need it. It’s the best feeling when someone who needs gluten-free food comes in and we have safe items for them.”
If you can, please bring a non-perishable gluten-free food donation to GFG. If you forget, you can “buy 2 and donate 1” at the event. Let’s fill the donation bins with gluten-free goodness and show what this community can do together 💚
