Provence may be the gold standard for pale, delicate rosé, but Italy is quietly rewriting the script—and few are more qualified to do so than Barolo icon Fratelli Borgogno.

Perched high on the legendary Cannubi hill, Serio & Battista Borgogno is a gem of a family estate that captures the soul of Piedmont in every bottle. For over a decade, we’ve proudly shared their Barolos and Barberas in Ontario—and now, for the first time ever, we’re thrilled to introduce their exceptional new rosé.

Produced by fifth-generation cousins Emanuela and Federica, Iole reflects the family’s deep roots, progressive spirit, and uncompromising commitment to quality—even in their most playful wines. A brand-new addition to our portfolio, “Iole” is a fresh, vivid take on Italian rosato from one of Barolo’s most respected producers.

Bone-dry and will slake any summer heat, I’ll be turning to it again and again all year round because a better food wine might not exist: All I think about when I taste this is what I’m going to cook next, and whether the first bottle will survive the preparation process!

This Public Service Announcement is direct and simple: On the off chance you’re presented with an affordable 2010 1er cru Pinot Noir from Burgundy’s fabled Côte d’Or, drop whatever you’re doing and secure everything you can. For $75, red Burgundy of this pedigree and palate-expanding magnitude, from one of the best contemporary vintages, is rapidly becoming an extinct breed. Sure, if you want a sublime 2010 from a 1er cru in the Cote de Beaune (1) aged in top-quality French oak and (2) produced in small quantities, others are still out there for the taking—just be prepared to start the bidding around $300+.

That’s why we’re still taken aback by what Maison Charles Noellat managed to pack into today’s bottle, one still benefiting from fifteen years of total maturation. Ultimately, you’re absconding with a deeply savory, delicious, and traditionally sculpted Pinot Noir from the Côte d’Or—the world’s most coveted slice of land for Pinot Noir. Recognizing its ability to evolve, one of our Burgundy contacts has been quietly stashing this parcel away for years, and just recently, was generous enough to “unlock the vault,” exclusively for us. Enjoy.

Santenay in the past was known to make wines that were similar to Pommard in that in their youth were rustic, but with age they blossom so beautifully! If Santenay is known for being somewhat sturdy and rustic, the 1er cru Passtemps is something of an anomaly; the wine is strikingly elegant, suave, and rich in texture. This is a deep wine with the broad shoulders and meatiness that might remind you of Gevrey-Chambertin at times, and at others Pommard. At the same time, it shows a more bold minerality, a fine-ness and detail that is simply extraordinary for Santenay. From a sublime vintage, at 15 years of age, this wine has shed its rusticity and entered its drinking prime.

92pt Chianti—Ludicrous Price! 🍷

The Paretaio Chianti is much more than a great value, it's a revelation. What has resolutely kept it on our shelves all these years? Its wallet-friendly price for starters (still under $23!) but more importantly, it is exceptionally well-balanced and thoughtfully constructed; a wine to serve at any occasion, exceeding our expectations vintage-over-vintage.

With a clearly styled signature, the hallmark of the Gaslini Alberti Family (more on them below the member reviews), the Paretaio is expertly modulated on every level. Smooth and easy going with a hint of freshness, the acid perfectly rounds out the palette, delivering ripe, red fruits and earthy Tuscan herbal hints to bring it full circle.

Effortlessly pairing with countless memorable meals while never failing to impress my guests (or me for that matter), it is still and always will be a great addition to any wine list.

The Secret Behind the Punt: What the hell is it for?!

Ever wondered about the indentation at the base of many wine bottles? Technically dubbed a punt, this concave-shaped portion of many bottles contains a galaxy of folklore.

Settling: Think of the punt as a mini volcano. In wines with sediment (like natural, unfiltered, or older bottles), the slope at the bottom helps the solids settle evenly.

Integrity: For sparkling wines like Champagne, the punt helps withstand the pressure from carbon dioxide. This design is crucial for bottle-fermented wines (and beers), which need extra sturdiness to handle the gas produced during fermentation.

Tricks and Trade: A punt adds a touch of class when pouring and aids in efficient storage and transport. It also helps chill the wine more effectively by exposing more of the bottle to cold water.

Tradition: Punts are a nod to winemaking traditions. Historically, handmade bottles required an entry and exit point for air, and the punt reflects this old craftsmanship.

Early Moderation: One fun theory suggests that punts were used by bartenders to prevent bottle refills. Bars had walls with sharp objects where empty bottles were thrown, and the punt would get pierced to discourage cheating.

Personally, I think it adds a nice visual distortion when you finish a bottle and decide to use it as a telescope....

Also, try sliding a bottle with and without a punt across your table. You’ll find that the former, generally, stays upright better.

What’s your favorite theory about the punt? Share your thoughts in the comments!
