Rye establishes quickly, provides excellent ground cover, and continues growing late into the fall, helping reduce soil erosion and nutrient loss over winter. Its deep root system improves soil structure, increases organic matter, and helps loosen compacted ground, creating better conditions for future crops.
Rye also plays an important role in nutrient management. It scavenges excess nitrogen left in the soil after harvest and stores it in plant biomass, reducing leaching and making nutrients more available to the following crop as the rye decomposes. In addition, rye suppresses weeds naturally by outcompeting them for light, moisture, and nutrients, which can help lower herbicide reliance in the next growing season.

Incorporating rye into our crop rotation supports long-term soil health by improving moisture retention, stimulating beneficial microbial activity, and increasing overall field resilience. When terminated and returned to the soil, rye adds valuable organic material that enhances fertility and promotes sustainable crop production year after year.

Work weekend at Schlosser Farm!
This week we’ve been hard at work getting our beds set up with drip irrigation — a new investment for the farm that will help us grow stronger, healthier vegetables despite the unpredictable weather.
As we continue to expand and improve, we’re excited for what this season will bring. Every upgrade helps us grow more efficiently and sustainably for our community.

Signs of spring are getting exciting around the farm!
The asparagus keeps growing a little more each day, and with warmer temperatures and sunshine on the way, harvest season is getting closer fast.
We’re eagerly watching the fields and hoping to start picking fresh asparagus within the week. The season is short, which makes those first fresh bundles even more special!
Nothing beats the taste of locally grown asparagus picked fresh from the field. Stay tuned — we can’t wait to share the first harvest of the season with you!

The wait is almost over… asparagus season is nearly here.
Our asparagus is finally starting to pop through the soil, and with a few warm, sunny days in the forecast, the season is about to begin. There’s nothing quite like the taste of freshly picked local asparagus — tender, sweet, and straight from the field to your table.
This short season is one we look forward to all year, and we’re hoping to have our first fresh-picked bundles available within the next week if the sunshine cooperates.
Stay tuned — the harvest can move quickly once the weather warms up, and you won’t want to miss those first picks of the season!

The rhubarb is coming along beautifully — thick stalks, deep red colour, and growing fast with the warm spring weather. The fields are filling in nicely, and this year’s crop is shaping up to be one of the best yet.
At Schlosser Farms, the rhubarb is looking especially promising this season. Strong early growth, vibrant colour, and healthy plants are setting the stage for an excellent harvest. If the weather keeps cooperating, it’s going to be a great year for fresh rhubarb.
Big red stalks, fresh spring flavour, and harvest season just around the corner. 🌿

Spring momentum is rolling at Schlosser Farm!
Maurice has been hard at work getting the next plot of land worked up and ready for this weekend’s corn planting. Every pass across the field is another step toward a new season of growth, long days, and the promise of a great harvest ahead. 🌽
There’s something special about this time of year — fresh soil, warmer days, and the teamwork that keeps the farm moving forward. From preparing the ground to planting the seed, it all starts with care, dedication, and pride in the land we work every day.
We’re excited to see this field come to life over the next few months! Stay tuned as planting season continues here at Schlosser Farm.

We dusted off Polly and put her back to work this past weekend—turning raw ground into perfectly imperfect raised beds.
Up here in Northern Ontario, the growing season doesn’t give you much room for error. Cold soil and short windows mean every advantage counts. That’s why we rely on raised beds paired with bio- and photodegradable mulch layers—to warm the soil faster, retain moisture, and give our crops the best possible start.
It’s not just about working the land—it’s about working smarter with the conditions we’re given.

From tiny cloves to bold, flavorful bulbs šŸ§„
At Schlosser Farm, every head of garlic starts with careful planting, rich soil, and a whole lot of patience. Over the months, these little cloves push through the earth, soak up the sunshine, and transform into something truly special.
There’s nothing rushed here—just steady growth, fresh air, and the kind of attention that makes all the difference you can taste.
Harvest season is always worth the wait.
