We’re excited to have a couple of entries in the National Show and Sale this year in Pictou!

We have a ram all picked out and are deciding which ewe lamb will fit the bill, if you’re a producer looking for quality stock be sure to mark this one on the calendar.

Having sheep is a great hobby, keeps you from getting bored

Saturday I was out checking the goat kids when I noticed one of the Rideau ram lambs limping badly in the field, when I finally caught him (swear they move faster on 3 legs) it was pretty noticeable that he’d broken his back right leg below the hock.

After a quick consult call with Dr Greene, we gave him a shot of painkiller and applied a first aid splint and waited for professional backup.

Dr Greene arrived and was able to splint the leg to allow for him to grow and not do further injury, so now the lamb is on light duty for a few weeks until he’s healed up.

Still not sure how he broke it, but it was a clean break and a decent chance of recovery

We really only ended up with one bottle lamb and a couple that get a little top up if they’re needing it, this girl is a Babydoll Southdown and her mom passed away after lambing.

She’s an aggressive little thing and doing well!

We’ve been pretty quiet lately with work and lambs and kids and all of the things.

We did some weighing today and vaccinating lambs and are generally happy with the results, always second guessing the decisions made before and striving to improve. Lots in the 40-50 pound range and a few tipping the scales at 80 at about 9/10 weeks old.

Most of the lambs have done quite well and are on feed and getting close to weaning time, our January group did amazing with ram lambs up to 130 lbs at around 4 months old. We’re shipping lambs and reorganizing life for the next round!

Add to that, the late group of doelings have been kidding so we have another 8 kids on the ground with one left to go

With only one Babydoll ewe left to lamb, we did some math on our lambing season

We had a relatively trouble free year, the normal jumbled up lambs and such but with a lot of first timers it went well.

We had 38 ewes scanned as bred and only one open in December, 37 have lambed to date.

17 were older ewes and had 38 lambs born for an average of 223%, 4 were lost in that group for a total of 34.

15 were ewe lambs that were just about a year old at lambing, they had 28 lambs for an average of 183% and we lost one from that group for a total of 27

The babydoll ewes were all first timers and 5 ewes had 6 lambs (one older ewe is still holding on) for an average of 120% and all of them survived

All in all a good year and the planning starts for 2027!

Happy Easter from the Lazy E!

The lambs love to use the feedwalk as a racetrack, which works great until it time to use it for a feedwalk
