We hauled a couple loads of goats down to pasture this weekend.

They graze well with the sheep as they tend to be browsers, while the sheep tend to graze and between the two they’ll do a good job cleaning up some of this overgrowth so we can start improving the ground.

Well, after what feels like approximately 2-1/2 years of fencing, Louis and the girls made it to pasture (we were worried the snow would hit first)

Everyone seems to be loving lots of room and lots of graze and browse!

Next weekend we take the wrecking crew (the goat herd) to hit the goldenrod, shrubs and trees.

Can’t say we weren’t disappointed to have to pull our entries from the All Canada Sheep Classic 🇨🇦, but we went and checked out the showing of some of the best breeders in Canada and it was definitely worth the trip!

I was really impressed with all the folks that made the trip from out west and Ontario to showcase their lines and of course our homegrown Maritime producers didn’t disappoint!

We didn’t take anything, but we managed to bring a new ram home, an Isle de France ram lamb from the King family in PEI will be going on some of our commercial ewes to produce solid market lambs for 2027, he’s an impressive lamb with a lot of depth in the leg and loin.

The best laid plans…

We’d entered a ram and a ewe lamb into the All Canada Classic Purebred Sale that’s being held in NS this year, we spent alot of time clipping washing and prepping and were ready to load the truck after a final wash and touch up on Wednesday when I noticed the ram was just “off”

After some observation and a visit from High Tides Vets, we decided he was having issues with an intermittent urinary blockage and needed treatment and wouldn’t be making the show and sale, disappointing, but much better than passing off a problem to a new buyer

We did learn a lot about prepping for show as we’d never done any of that before, so we’ll be ready for the next one!

I most certainly underestimated how long this would take 🤣 glad I’m not getting paid by the foot

And if anyone from Wolf excavators is reading this and you want to use this job as an advertisement, I’m using your mini excavator in ways it should never have been used

The catalog for the All Canada Sheep Classic in Pictou is out, over 200 animals on offer this year.

This is great to see so many breeders for all across the country making the trip!

On this weeks list of things I should’ve done 5 years ago…

Clearing out the property lines to run some new fence, hoping the ewes and goats will hammer back some of the over grown vegetation so we can get this piece of ground productive again

Having sheep is a great hobby, keeps you from getting bored

Saturday I was out checking the goat kids when I noticed one of the Rideau ram lambs limping badly in the field, when I finally caught him (swear they move faster on 3 legs) it was pretty noticeable that he’d broken his back right leg below the hock.

After a quick consult call with Dr Greene, we gave him a shot of painkiller and applied a first aid splint and waited for professional backup.

Dr Greene arrived and was able to splint the leg to allow for him to grow and not do further injury, so now the lamb is on light duty for a few weeks until he’s healed up.

Still not sure how he broke it, but it was a clean break and a decent chance of recovery
