Just made a brief trek out to check on the piglets! So glad to see that they are thriving 🄰

Our wee sow ended up having 6 piglets last night! There’s a full video on our YouTube channel (Moon Moth Farm over there as well)

Since I talk too much to make ā€œproperā€ reels, I decided to start using our YouTube channel again šŸ˜… Here’s a video about the new sheep paddock, and some chitchat about the next project. If you’re not sure about running electric fence with t-posts, this might have some helpful tips in it!

Kubota might be the only ā€œbig fluffy cloudā€ dog I ever own šŸ˜… It’s just REALLY difficult to keep him properly groomed

Enjoy this unedited video of me moving our mob of sheep into their new pasture! Mike had planned to follow me, but ended up having to hang back to round up straggler lambs šŸ˜… Anyway, everyone made it into the new paddock - after a month of work the new fence is DONE!

Raising pigs is just not economical, especially breeding our own. Between increasing feed costs and processing expenses, the math is terrible on them. We will be raising a limited number of pigs each summer, going forward, but we won’t be breeding them anymore

In November 2024, we brought home our first sheep - 4 ewes and a ram. We only bought them because we couldn’t afford cattle, and we wanted to utilize all the acres of pasture we had sitting vacant. At the time, I was skeptical about sheep. I didn’t think I would like them, and I’d heard that they are skittish, prone to dying stupidly, and difficult to keep in.

It turns out that only one of those things have been true for us šŸ˜

Tonight we unloaded the third (and final) group of ewes and lambs that we recently purchased from our ā€œSheep Lady’sā€ herd dispersal. With those additions, Moon Moth Farm is now home to 79 sheep. We have 34 adult ewes, a ā€œteenage ramā€ and 44 lambs.

It turns out that I adore sheep. They are curious and some are so friendly, you can’t help but fall in love with them. We’ve been extremely lucky, in that we haven’t had any issues with lambing or them dying in terrible ways. They do escape from time to time, but it turns out they aren’t very adventurous and don’t tend to wander far (knock on wood).

We’ve decided to go ā€œall inā€ on sheep, and we will be focusing the majority of our time and resources on growing our flock, and moving away from pigs and meat chickens (at least for the time being).

Fresh grass day!! Moving the sheep can sometimes be a little bit stressful šŸ˜… Especially when we have to take them a little bit of a distance. Basically one of us sacrifices themselves and carries a bucket of grain and shakes it, and is thusly absolutely mobbed and half-trampled by the sheep. I recommend that you NEVER wear sandals as the Bucket B*tch šŸ˜†. That person guides the flock as quickly as possible to the new location. The other person follows behind the group to encourage any stragglers. We’ve gotten pretty good at it, but during this time of year, when delicious grass is EVERYWHERE, it can be challenging to keep the sheep together in a group. Today went relatively smoothly, and hopefully this paddock keeps them happy for a few days at least

Posting will probably continue to be a little bit sporadic, until this fence is done šŸ˜… We are getting there, it’s just taking longer than we hoped, as we need to work around both of our ā€œday jobsā€ and the regular farm chores. It’s our first time installing an entire permanent electric fence ourselves, so there’s been a lot of learning, but we are so happy with how it’s going! I really can’t wait to release our entire mob (of soon to be 80 sheep, heh) into this new paddock. For now they are serving as excellent lawn mowers ā˜ŗļø
