Sometimes the Universe hits you with a baseball bat. Last night a fox got into my chicken coop, that we affectionately had called Coop Knox. A loose hinge was pulled out & he went under the door. My entire faverolles flock & laying hens and about 20 grow outs, gone. All I have left are 3 hens & a pair of ancient Swedish Blue ducks.

There will be no more chicks or eggs this year. If anyone I have sold faverolles to over the years is selling eggs or chicks I would be interested in buying some to rebuild.

This is going to be a tough day.

Let’s talk about Shipped Eggs.

So, full disclosure, I have never had amazing luck with shipped eggs. My friends and I joke that I’m semi-cursed. 😅 But after a wretched winter I decided to risk it to bring some new breeds onto the farm.

In my incubators right now I have Icelandics from BC, shipped from lower mainland. They were packed impeccably, double boxed, bubble wrapped & each egg individually wrapped in cartons. I let them sit undisturbed for 24 hours, then put them into my Brinsea. Air cells were all detached, not unusual for shipped eggs so turner was kept off. After candling last night on day 7, 10/18 are going strong. 8 were bloodrings (so started & quit). Honestly best result I have ever had. I will continue to update on them as we progress.

Shipped eggs are ALWAYS a gamble, even 50% development is a good result. So cross your fingers & toes for me because this breed has been on my wish list a long time.

The other breed is Partridge Chantclers, also from BC but from about 30 minutes away by car just across the border. Those are only on day 6 and they are in my Sportsman on the auto turner. They were also allowed to rest for 24 hours. Updates on those to follow.

End of a very busy week. We had the North Peace Critter & Craft Sale on Saturday and met so many people & helped some people find new rabbits for their herds. Seed starting continues & had to do some emergency repair for one of my apple trees. This poor tree got hit by the moose and voles under the snow line. Made some diy grafting wax & sealed off the bark wound.
