Our story began at the Food Technology lab at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. During our final semester, we entered Mission ImPULSEible, a product development competition organized by Pulse Canada, and created a lentil and chickpea tempeh derivative that we proudly named Tempea. Our team won the BC regional competition and headed on to nationals at the 2015 Canadian Special Crops Association (CSCA) Conference. Having considered the attention Tempea was getting, supported with further market research, we realized that tempeh and its derivatives have a huge market potential in Canada. These events sparked the motivation for a business start-up and led to the inception of Tempea Natural Foods.
