This Toronto shoe store feels more like a fashion museum than a boutique. 🥹

Gravity Pope Toronto opened in 2012 as a space designed with a mix of modern fixtures, Louis XVI furniture and 1920s French chandeliers. But the real showstopper is the staircase, reclaimed from a 1934 theatre in Buenos Aires.

The store was founded by Louise Dirks, who opened the first Gravity Pope in Edmonton in 1990. She started it as a small shoe shop with a coffee shop in the back, and eventually turned it into a leading Canadian fashion retailer.

Today, you can browse shoes, clothing, and accessories, including unique international and designer labels you won’t necessarily find elsewhere in Toronto. Even if you’re not shopping, the three floor space is worth exploring just for the interiors.

Shopping at Shoppers inside a 1920s theatre 🥹

The Runnymede Theatre was built in 1927 and designed to make you feel like you were outdoors. Inside, the ceiling was painted like a blue sky, with lighting effects that could project clouds and stars.

The theatre was designed by Alfred Chapman, a Toronto architect well known for his work on the Royal Ontario Museum. It originally opened as a 1,400+ seat vaudeville theatre and was nicknamed “Canada’s Theatre Beautiful.”

Today, you can walk in for your usual Shoppers run, but you’ll still spot pieces of the old theatre, including the historic façade and remnants of its theatrical design. It’s one of those Toronto places where you can casually shop for beauty products while standing inside nearly a century of history.

Grrr… the world’s biggest oddity shop is hiding in Toronto 🦴

Prehistoria Museum & SkullStore is home to thousands of ethical animal skulls, skeletons, taxidermy mounts, fossils, crystals, ancient artifacts, and all kinds of fascinating curiosities.

It’s also a fun spot for unique souvenirs at all kinds of price points. The shop feels more like a museum than a store, where you can get up close to T. rex fossils, animal skeletons, and some seriously unexpected finds.

Admission is by donation, and I’d definitely recommend contributing to help keep this one-of-a-kind place going!

This historic mansion, what was once a party hall for the elite class, provides you an opportunity to go back in time to a very unique period in Canada’s history. Build in 1818, this multi-story house was long owned by James Austin, the founder of what is now TD Bank (Dominon Bank).

The architecture of the Austin Home is inspired by the Italliante architectural style combined with elements of later Victorian and Edwardian styles, which is why it feels less like a typical Toronto home and more like a European castle tucked right in the city. Examples include its floating staircase in the central hall, high baseboards, ceiling medallions, and hardwood floors.

I you want to learn the story behind the mansion, I recommend going on a Friday where they offer a free-guided tour (first come first served).

Just 30 minutes away from downtown Toronto, RC Harris Water Treatment Plant has the best walk trail for those seeking to escape from the chaos of downtown life.

You will be greeted with a serene and unobstructed view of Ontario lake as well as the short trail with benches that make your evening walk peaceful and zen.

Go on weekdays to avoid heavy crowds, and make sure to visit 30 minutes before the sunset to fully appreciate the spot!
