Lakes are one of the most powerful natural moderators a vineyard can have. The core effect is temperature regulation — water heats and cools much more slowly than land, so in summer the lake keeps surrounding vineyards cooler during the day, and in autumn it releases stored warmth, extending the growing season and protecting against early frosts. That extended hang time is huge for ripening aromatic compounds and developing complexity.

The overhead canopy creates natural shade for the fruit, which is particularly useful in warm, sunny climates to prevent sunburn and retain acidity. It also promotes excellent air circulation underneath, reducing fungal disease pressure. The trade-off is that it's labor intensive and harder to mechanize compared to VSP.

It produces both red and white wines — The most sought-after wines are actually the whites on the Pernand side of the Corton hill — 17 of the 58 hectares entitled to the grand cru Corton-Charlemagne appellation sit within Pernand-Vergelesses, which is a big deal.
