Chocolate still matters, especially during Halloween and fall. But in 2026, relying too heavily on mini chocolate bars can put unnecessary pressure on retail margins.

Higher cocoa costs, smaller pack sizes, and changing household buying habits appear to be pushing more shoppers toward gummies, sour candy, fruit chews, peg bags, and larger-value non-chocolate formats. For retailers, that means the smartest seasonal assortment may not be the one with the most chocolate. It may be the one with the best balance.

Independent retailers rarely win by trying to look exactly like the chains around them.
