Delighted to find Sarah Raven in bloom yesterday. Wasn’t haven’t the most uplifting day and then spied her quietly stunning self and all the wispy yuck left! She is solidly gorgeous - 2 toned and red and orange together. Thank you Sarah Raven for all you do.

Preparing Wedding Flowers. I always remember the feeling I had after I got married. I was surprised that I really did feel different, as if something special had taken place. (I was young and not yet very worldly). I bring that same attitude to the flowers I prepare for other brides to be.

I quietly walk the beds and start with an inspiration of colour or scent or a kind note sent by a customer - “Your flowers are so beautiful. So special to bless people with your beautiful arrangements. Thank you”.

Will these new stems of parvifolia hold, do I like the giant scabiosa seed heads, do I like the pastel dahlias, how long does the hyssop last, how do the apricotta cosmos age, what colour would I add to the night silence dahlia. Hanging out with the stems at breakfast, lunch and dinner teaches me a lot. And there is no design pressure, no stress to get it right. I just cut the stems and sit back and watch. 😎

Doing flowers when a loved one has died is such a privilege. I cut the flowers with her in mind. I was told she had enjoyed bouquets from our farm and that she loved pink and purple. I fussed and rearranged and looked again, wanting everything to be special. I thought of my mom and how I miss her. In the end, I was satisfied. A send off that I hope was fitting.

My studio often has beautiful stems but they come and go remarkably quickly. I take them in, feel immense gratitude, and then they go off into the world. This one got to stay home. A mistake really. I meant to send them home to bring joy to another but…..aren’t they spectacular. And they will quietly continue for weeks.

Orange and white and bronze and speckled. And the doubles have no pollen so no searching to remove those staining anthers. Hugely tall and then some shorter and sometimes scented and other times not. And 10 becomes 30 in just 1 year. Why didn’t someone tell me? ( Truth is someone tried and I couldn’t hear them). 🙃

Inspiration comes from so many different places for me. A thought, a colour, a line in a book, a spoken phrase in a video. I love them all and respect their power.
