- [Pacific Halibut Supply Tightens Further] --- For North American buyers, the outlook remains clear: Pacific halibut supplies are expected to remain tight, prices are likely to stay firm, and opportunities to secure frozen inventory will be extremely limited. Our recommendation is to secure your Pacific halibut commitments with suppliers as early as possible. At the same time, buyers should evaluate Atlantic halibut as an alternative source of supply.

- [Atlantic Halibut Surpasses Pacific Supply?] --- Beyond Canada, Norway has historically harvested up to 8 million pounds of wild Atlantic halibut annually, though recent landings suggest production may have slipped closer to 6 million pounds in 2025. Together, Canadian and Norwegian Atlantic halibut harvests would exceed current West Coast Pacific halibut production, underscoring Atlantic halibut’s growing role in a tightening global halibut market.

As for supply, new-season frozen Pacific halibut remains exceptionally scarce early in the season, with most landings flowing into the fresh market. Last year, fresh demand absorbed the bulk of production through September, and we expect a similar trend in 2026.

- [Atlantic Halibut Rising as Pacific Supply Tightens] --- Meanwhile, Canada’s Atlantic halibut fishery has expanded steadily, with the Total Allowable Catch increasing from approximately 12 million pounds in 2019 to nearly 19 million pounds for the 2026–2027 season. As Pacific halibut harvests face record-low catch limits, Atlantic halibut is emerging as a viable alternative supply source, with Canadian production now nearing Pacific halibut volumes.

Canadian Atlantic halibut is widely recognized as a sustainable seafood choice, with MSC-certified fisheries. Culinarily, Atlantic halibut offers a richer, more robust flavor profile, while Pacific halibut is prized for its lean, mild, subtly sweet flesh and clean, flaky texture.

- [Atlantic Halibut Closing the Gap on Pacific Supply] --- As the 2026 Pacific halibut season enters its third month, harvests remain behind last year’s pace as fishermen work within a reduced, record-low catch limit. At the same time, Canada’s wild Atlantic halibut fishery has received a Total Allowable Catch increase, raising the prospect that Canadian wild-caught Atlantic halibut landings could approach parity with West Coast wild Pacific halibut harvests this year.

In the latest tally, Pacific halibut landings have reached just under 4.9 million pounds, roughly 1 million pounds behind the same period last year and representing 21 percent of this year’s record-low fishery limit. The International Pacific Halibut Commission reduced the 2026 TCEY to 29.33 million pounds—nearly 10 million pounds below levels seen five years ago and one of the lowest catch limits in the fishery’s history. Based on current harvest trends, this year’s net-weight Pacific halibut harvest could finish just shy of 20 million pounds, extending another year of extremely tight supply in an already constrained market.

Alaska Salmon Update – June 8, 2026

The Alaska salmon season is underway, and early results are painting a mixed picture across species.

King salmon supplies remain tight due to weak returns and ongoing conservation measures.

Sockeye salmon is performing better than expected, with strong early harvests and encouraging preseason forecasts across several key regions.

Chum salmon continues to offer the most comfortable supply outlook, supported by strong hatchery production and healthy harvests.

Pink salmon faces the most challenging supply outlook, with lower expected production and tighter raw material availability.

For seafood buyers, processors, and distributors, the biggest story to watch over the coming weeks is Bristol Bay. The strength of the sockeye run will play a major role in shaping salmon supply and pricing for the remainder of 2026.

- [Our Recommendation: Prepare for One of the Tightest Salmon Supply Years in Recent Memory] --- Our recommendation is to stay ahead of the market rather than waiting for lower pricing, as reduced Alaska and Russian pink salmon production - combined with continued weakness in Japan’s chum salmon returns - could create one of the tightest wild salmon supply years in recent memory. Buyers should expect pricing to strengthen as the season moves forward, especially on key wild salmon categories like pinks, chum, and premium sockeye products.

This report is just the first of many summer salmon updates we will be sharing throughout the season. Be sure to subscribe to our 3-Minute Market Insight using the signup form or links below to stay up to date on developments shaping the 2026 salmon market.

- [How 2025 Set the Stage for a Tighter 2026 Salmon Market] --- In 2025, global salmon markets tightened considerably as pink salmon harvests sharply underperformed across Alaska and Asia, chum salmon production fell to multi-decade lows in Japan and Asia, sockeye remained the most stable premium wild segment, and North Pacific hatchery releases dropped to their lowest level in 19 years - reinforcing concerns over long-term supply pressure and firmer future pricing across key wild salmon categories.

As the new season unfolds, harvest timing across Alaska will play a major role in shaping summer market conditions. Typically beginning with Copper River sockeye and Chinook fisheries in May, before sockeye harvests rapidly ramp up through June and peak in late June to early July. Pink and chum salmon fisheries accelerate through July and peak in early August, while Coho salmon harvests build later in the summer and remain strongest from August into September.
