Exciting news everyone! Chesapeake Light Craft is now selling kits for our boats. Since 80% of our beloved customers are Americans, we've been struggling recently with the uncertainty and challenges with tariffs since we're based out of Canada.

The solution has been in partnering with CL CLC is now the North American provider of our kits and are available as cnc-wood-cut parts only, or full kits with epoxy supplies

We've tried to simplify the process as much as possible. If you're interested in getting a kit, first you buy digital plans from Angus Rowboats - this is essenntially our royalty in the process - you then purchase the kit option of choice from CLC, and they will confirm with us that plans have been obtained.

We're excited to build on this partnership, and for more information on the kits, please visit: https://clcboats.com/collections/angus-rowboats

Okay, Johnnie Groome of Australia gets the award for expedition of the year in a RowCruiser. This is what you get when you stuff Crocodile Dundee into a 19' rowboat. Over six weeks Johnnie voyaged through the most remote and dangerous part of Australia around Cape York. Here's his writeup on the trip:

"Just finished my much anticipated Australian Cape York trip. Not all the way to Weipa but 300km from Karumba to Pormpuraaw over a period of six weeks is a good stint. Roughly half way and one of few places possible to exit the gulf from. Unavoidable problems had me starting late and with only North east/west head winds and side on westerlies giving rough chop I've decided to "chop" the trip into two sections and finish the rest next season. The boat stored at Pormpuraaw and an easy re-start.

Very little com's and some bad news when I finally did get communication coupled with the challenging conditions decided the early exit. Extensive mud/sand flats and low end of day tides saw long all night boat extractions that saw me collapse into "bed" after daybreak at the end of a 26 hour or greater day!!! Dealing with crocodiles and sharks at these times after often hot days demands great mental stamina of which I then lacked.

Living mainly on fish caught supplemented with rice, saltanas, schreaded coconut, tinned tomatoes, potatoes and onions I've ended the trip in much better shape than I started. The 70lt of water I had to take made the rowing harder. With a modest lug sail set-up sailing was useful during beam on westerlies although the steep chop made for wet progress. Mostly I rowed.

Sharks were more an issue than crocs as they hit the oar paddles and the rudder. Next was the giant barramundi that greyhounded out of the shallows often striking the boat. Boars and dingos were another worry. The boars particularly as some I had to scare off with sticks after they ignored my shouts to keep clear. The Tucker box had me worried with these guys.

Apologies for the lack of a map...I'll endeavor to add one when I can."

Team Chiliwilliwa is tearing it up in the Race to Alaska! They've overtaken the other RowCruisers and are now (we believe) the leading boat under 20 feet, putting them in the running for the $1,000 first-under-20-foot prize.

Interestingly, the team consists of two people (instead of the typical solo entry) , and they've been putting in many 24-hour pushes. Chris Reuter and John Calderera, two young men from Redmond, Washington, have proven they're tough as nails. Having competed in the R2AK myself, I know just how hard these guys are pushing.

Well done so far! They're now closing in on Bella Bella, with Team Hull Yeah, sailing a Corsair F-27, just behind them.

Update**** We've just heard from Brandon of Turnpoint Design, " Not just 1000 bucks but a set of tactical titanium sporks cut down to just the bare minimum of length to save a few grams. Boxed up in a collectors addition case machined from a solid block of graphite. Priceless. Way better than steak knives or 10k."

R2AK Sporks, this is priceless. Small Craft Advisor Magazine is putting up the 1K, and Turnpoint design is providing the titanium sporks. Thanks for adding an exciting dynamic to the race!!

Go Doug Shoup!! We've been following the Race to Alaska with excitement. Of the six RowCruisers in this year's race, Doug Shoup of Team Perseverence is currently leading the pack, moving past Comox at an impressive 5.5 knots.

Doug is rowing a beautifully customized RowCruiser equipped with a Hobie pedal drive for propulsion. After the race, his boat would make a stunning piece of furniture in an appropriately sized living room!

Good luck to Doug and the rest of the Race to Alaska competitors.

The current overall leader is North Bound Nutters aboard a Farrier 32, having already reached Bella Bella. Well done to everyone taking on this incredible challenge!

Congratulations to James Gibling for being the first of six Row Cruisers on the first leg (65 km) of the Race to Alaska!

And huge congratulations to team Wing It for the overall first place finish! This was accomplished using a Rockpool kayak. Calm conditions allowed human power to triumph on this leg.

The first leg is still ongoing (you can track it here https://cf.yb.tl/r2ak2026) but if all the RowCruisers make it, that means about ten percent of the fleet going north to Ketchikan will be RowCruisers. Should be fun to track.

If you're looking to meet interesting people the R2AK folks will be hanging in the Victoria inner harbour tomorrow. There are people from all over the world, and the kind of Americans we love - the eclectic, creative and adventurous sorts.

Good luck on the leg forward everyone!

This picture is of James finishing the slog and entering Victoria Harbour.

It's exciting watching the first leg of Race to Alaska this morning! There's a race within the race with five of our RowCruisers competing. Currently of the RowCruisers, team Perseverance (Doug Shoup) and Bangarang (James Gibb) are neck and neck in the lead. The overall leading boat is team Rainy in a Rockpool Kayak. You can track it here:https://cf.yb.tl/r2ak2026

In school, there was one class that I failed dismally at - computer science. So, in light of that, I feel my latest project could be my personal Sistine Chapel of achievements. Super stoked to announce our new AI powered marine mammal monitoring and detection system which we launched on Friday.

You can check out the real time dashboard at https://sailbotix.com/demo-buoy-dashboard/. It’s stationed off Oak Bay, Canada.

Basically, we’ve stuck the entire operating platform of our USV into a moored buoy. We even use the same hull structure (just removed the thruster and navigation system). So what can it do? Here’s the list:
1) Wave height and period
2) Thermal camera
3) Four full-surround visible light cameras
4) One underwater camera
5) AI-powered marine mammal hydrophone detection system
6) Met Ocean Data (wind speed, direction, pressure, water , temp etc.

But the fat sensor suite isn’t what really makes this buoy powerful, it’s the electrical and software systems platform. Runninng all sensors (cameras, hydrophone, etc) and transmitting to shore via LTE uses a paltry 7.4 Watts. Low power mode (all sensors but cameras and hydrophone) uses 0.7 watts! In low power mode, it switches to Iridium Certus and provides updates at a chosen frequency. Low power consumption and power scalability is achieved by using a dual processor system and sophisticated power management controls.

The buoy has three communications channels – Iridium Certus (low power) and remote, LTE mid power and optimal, and Starlink (works everywhere and provides girthy bandwidth). Starlink use adds an additional 30 watts to the load, however, can be turned on and off for bulk data transfer at intervals. The cameras can be configured in countless different ways between sending still images and video. They are currently set to send images every ten seconds.
A 100 watt solar panel provides ample power in spring/summer/fall conditions, and it can be fitted with a150 watt panel for winter. For winter use, there are many options for tiered power management, and onboard AI analytics to get the full picture.

What you see running in this buoy is what also runs in our USVs – a modular, and exceptionally versatile electrical system that sips power sparingly. We are storing all the images collected from our buoy to fine tune our AI models

Our next stage of development for both our buoys and USVs is to further develop our AI analytics to increase onboard intelligence, so human operators are only bothered when events of interest occur. That’s what you call low cost, low effort ocean moniotorig.
