Operated since 1985 by the Koenders family in conjunction with the Beacon Hill Farm Society, the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm takes pride in providing both an educational and economical form of entertainment for the whole family. The hands-on experience, particularly with the most popular feature that is the goat petting area, encourages children be compassionate toward living creatures.

Meet Doug! 🦆
He's a really big boy and currently our largest duck at the farm. Doug belongs to the British breed of Silver Appleyard duck, which is known for being large with gorgeous feathers and a calm temperament. And Doug certainly is all that: huge, handsome, easygoing, and kind.
Doug has formed close relationships with some of the ducks in our flock. He is very fond of his girlfriend, Maude, 💕who is never far away. Together, they have taken on the role of step-parents to our now adult raft of five runner ducks - one of whom actually looks like a mini, upright doppelgänger of Doug! They form a cute little quacking family.
Something very unique about Doug is his favourite sleeping position. If you spot him napping in the duck yard, he doesn't look like the others. While most ducks tuck their heads under their wings to sleep, Doug stretches right out with his neck draped over the ground. Don't worry, that's just his own quirky way of resting!
In many ways, Doug is a typical duck. He loves to quack and swim, and when the pond is freshly filled, he's one of the first ones in, splashing around and enjoying it. He can be loud, proud, and never too shy to let you know he's around, yet he has a gentle, kind side that makes it clear just how truly special he is.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, we honour residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and the children who never made it home.

We acknowledge with respect and gratitude the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples on whose traditional territory míqən (Beacon Hill Park) sits, and the Songhees Nation and Esquimalt Nation who have cared for and used this land for millennia, and whose relationship with this land continues today.

The farm is open today until 4pm if you are looking for a peaceful place to spend some time and connect with the animals. 🧡

Meet Macey! She is a quiet middle-aged goat lady who is beautiful inside and out.

Macey has a very dense coat that gives her an extra “teddy bear” look, and especially after the winter, she takes some extra time to finish shedding and get ready for warmer weather. Combined with her gorgeous long shiny beard and her beautiful markings, she truly is a looker!

And Macey is just as beautiful on the inside. She appears to be a little quiet and introverted, and she is often observed doing things her own way. When Macey wants attention from her humans, she will simply come over and ask for it politely by gently putting her leg on ours, which is the goat version of saying “please”.

Macey is respectful and self-assured. She has a secure spot in our goat hierarchy, and not many will challenge her position. She isn't one to butt heads and end up in a timeout stall, but she stands her ground in a way that means she doesn't get picked on either. She simply doesn't engage in the goat drama.

For quite a long time, Macey was a little bit of a loner who would spend her time lying down, contemplating the world, and chewing her cud. However, for the last few years, she has found a best friend in Rova, and the two of them can be found napping or sunbathing together.

One more secret fun fact about Macey: She has a half-sister in our goat herd. Can you guess who it is? Let us know your guesses in the comments!

Come visit Macey and her goat friends here at the farm! We’re open tomorrow and every day until October 12 from 10am-4pm.

Duck feet are pretty cool. They're webbed, and they come in lots of different colours and sizes depending on the breed of duck.

On land, they don't look very graceful. Ducks waddle along and sometimes trip over their own toes. Once they're in the water, those wide webbed feet turn into strong little paddles that push them along with ease.

Healthy feet matter a lot to a duck. Wet, dirty bedding can lead to sore spots and infections, so our team gives the ducks clean, dry bedding every day. It keeps their feet comfortable and ready for the next swim.

Next time you come to visit, take a peek at some duck feet and appreciate how perfectly designed they are for a life of swimming.

Happy Fall Equinox from Beacon Hill Children's Farm!

Today we'd like you to meet Pumpkin
Alpaca lady Pumpkin is 10 years old and she arrived at the farm last summer with her half sister, Sweetie Pie . The two of them were adopted from a small farm on Denman Island . They fit in so well with our senior alpacas Osmond and Lacy and truly make our little alpaca herd complete.

You might notice Pumpkin has a unique smile with her front teeth sticking out quite a bit. It gives her cute inquisitive face a really big grin! Don't worry, it doesn't get in the way of her eating at all as alpacas mainly use their back molars for chewing. And we help her out by feeding her a soft mash every day.

Pumpkin likes to hang out with her alpaca buddies and gets easily worried when they are out of sight. When the alpacas are out on their morning grazing adventures. Pumpkin sometimes wanders off on her own or day dreams along while the others walk off. Shortly after you can see her first looking a little lost and soon after zooming 💨 around the farm until she finds them again .

During the day Pumpkin likes to observe 👀 everything going on around her, keeping an eye on farm visitors, staff and all the other animals - always sending her very outgoing sister Sweetie Pie 🥧 to the fence to investigate or greet anything new.

We are so happy and grateful for this unique, happy, goofy 😜 and sweet lady: our own special spicy Pumpkin Mix!

Come say hi to Pumpkin next time you visit!
