Reminder: social media is a highlight reel

But life has REAL moments and you can’t compare it to someone’s highlights!

I always have tried to keep it REAL with you guys. And today feels like one of those failing at everything days and I could post some nice edited photos and say how great it’s all going, but that would be fake.

Today I went to w**d a whole row of pickling cucumbers that are not there. And I don’t know if it was cut worms, germination failure, pigs, goats, ducks or chickens that’s responsible. All I know is they’re not there and I planted them and saw for sure one had come up last I checked and now there are none.

While searching for these cucumbers I got a message from my son’s teacher asking if she could give him leftover pizza, because I didn’t send him a lunch today. I sent his swim stuff though!!

I have chickens and ducks and pigs everywhere that need to be in pens, w**ds that need to be pulled, plants that still need transplanted and veggies to harvest. I honestly feel like crying with overwhelm, but I will continue to take the next step forward and trust that it will all come together as planned.

Oh, and for those asking. No the farmstand is not yet open. I’m sorry to disappoint you, I know many love it. Hopefully by July 1, I will have life together enough to manage the extra task of keeping it stocked.

So there’s my unhighlight reel for today…

We had a mini getaway to Minot for a wedding and some fun adventures to the train museum and kids discovery centre. Along with some swimming and family time. It’s not easy to get away June- September with the garden and livestock, but thanks to some wonderful neighbours it happened!!

Soap reviews so far

“You need a new formula, it lasts too long. You won’t make any money” From a friend using the Cinna-mint bar daily since March.

“It works so well” neighbours kids who got sent over to buy more soap after they were fighting over whose bar was whose.

“The hand soap is luxurious. I wash my hands A LOT and they are way less drying” that’s the power of lard, goats milk and honey that is in our hand soaps. Ingredients pull moisture to the skin and hydrate.

We’ll have our soaps available at the Farmers Market this year. But get them while they’re available, because I probably won’t be getting around to making more until fall.

Happy pigs and ducks living in the woods by the creek! A peaceful spot to get away from the loud Guinea fowl.

Well the answer to my last video is corn!! 🌽 Popcorn to be more specific. We’re leaving the sweet corn growing to the Guthries. I wanted to plant something nitrogen loving, but off the ground as the compost isn’t fully broken down, it could carry some pathogen risk. Compared to something like lettuce greens that the part you eat is in direct contact with the soil, corn felt like a safe option. I don’t want bare soil becoming all w**dy so on one half I also added a cover crop of Sugar Beets (if successful they’ll be for the livestock) and on the other half we did a garden cover mix with 8 different crops in it. It’s honestly all purely experimental but it’s better than sitting bare for the season and if we can continue to improve the soil for next year, even better! Plus who doesn’t love popcorn!

Vegetable subscription sign ups will soon close. This is a great way to guarantee your favourite vegetables every week.

Two options available:
1. We pick what veggies you get each week, offering a variety of classics and some new to you vegetables.
2. You curate what goes in your bag each week. Guaranteeing you get what you love.

Why choose a subscription over shopping week to week at the farmers market? Our subscription customers get first priority. Anything that we have limited amounts of get offered to you before the general public.

If there’s an unfortunate weather event that takes out crops, we will source from other local growers to make sure you are still fed.

Support local, and guarantee yourself fresh veggies!

Ps. Last year we grew over 40 different vegetables and varieties, you won’t get bored of the same 5 vegetables with us!

If things grow as planned we’ll have radishes at the first Virden Farmers’ Market! Were a bit behind seeding due to not wanting to waste seed by planting in cold soil and having subpar germination. But radishes don’t mind some cold weather and if my soil thermometer is correct (I’m having doubts) things were heating up today. Also there may be a drop in carrot germination due to a construction site being built while my back was turned 🤦‍♀️
