TRI-COUNTY REGIONAL ADULT EDUCATION: APRIL

FLORAL WORKSHOPS

APRIL 1ST, 2026: Join Marjorie and me for a spring floral design workshop! (https://registration.xendirect.com/tri-county/courseDisplay.cfm?schID=4580) Guests will be invited to create a floral centerpiece using a beautiful selection of blooms in an array of refreshing pastels. All materials provided!

APRIL 8TH, 2026: I'll be hosting our annual Cut Flower Garden 101 Class (https://registration.xendirect.com/tri-county/courseDisplay.cfm?schID=4584) ! Join me for a presentation that will cover topics from space designing/planning, gear and supplies, bouquet making, cut flower care, and more. There will be some demonstrations, and we'll be sowing trays with an array of seed, too, which you will take home to grow on and enjoy. All materials provided.

LATEST MERCH

Our last two dried wreaths of the year are now available over our website (https://www.oldexit17farm.com/s/shop) ! These two are both much larger than we'd normally create, but were made on handcrafted grapevine wreaths (from our own slip-skin grape prunings!), so they are perhaps a tad more dramatic than those made on a wire form (in the best way possible). Most everything used was grown, and dried, on the farm, including, but not limited to, strawflower, statice, scabiosa seed, larkspur, dahlia, helipterum, marigold, dusty miller, feverfew, ammobium, celosia, amaranth, Utrecht Blue wheat, gomphrena, and so much more. They also contain some lovely foraged materials found here, including milkweed seed pods and White Pine cones. We even included some treasures gifted to us from both our florist friends and from the gardens of our friends in the Iris Society of Massachusetts. To discover more, please visit our website.

It’s been more than a minute… and I’m certain there will be things to share soon, but for now, a moment of quietude. Freelancing, sowing seeds indoors, overthinking and overspending, trying to map out an uncertain future all the while existing in this mess of a world that feels more stressful and more frustrating and yet more hopeful than ever. But here are some new works made with the last of the remaining dried flowers and foraged materials. It’s taken a minute to photograph them — the snow and the cold and the wind… February might be the shortest month, but it always feels like the longest…

Anyway… back to hibernating. 💤❄️

Greetings!

It's most certainly been a moment since we've sent out a newsletter, but with the holiday season quickly approaching, there's a bit more to share. This year has been oh so busy and, without question, the remaining weeks are certain to come and go in a flash—so let's get to it!

For those of you curious about my overwhelming absence from the Franklin Farmers Markets, I have been freelancing as an event florist. While I do miss seeing friends and familiar faces at the market, I know things are in good hands with Bette. Bless her for covering week after week and a very public 'Thank You' for helping ensure that we can continue to be a part of the very vibrant Franklin Farmers Market while also allowing the business to take new directions... (Also, how lucky are we to have such an amazing market in town? A million thank yous to Lauren and Roger for all that they do!)

I feel very fortunate to have such a supportive community: not only family to step in when needed, but also incredible floral design mentors who have graciously offered me opportunities to learn and grow, regular customers who keep the lights on, and local businesses that support us by purchasing our flowers and opening up their spaces to let us host workshops and engage with their communities.

Let's be real for a second. This year was tough for us farmers (isn't it always, but for different reasons!) We had an excess of rain in the early growing season, then drought for much of the summer. Per usual, there were many successes, but also quite a few busts! We make it work! But, really it's our supporters who are to thank for our successes. We're blessed with an understanding and supportive community that is there for us whatever fate and nature bring... You know who you are... and we appreciate and adore you.

Anyway, we have a lot of fun workshops coming up and more likely to be anounced, so please follow us on social if you aren't already. And if you're in need of florals for Thanksgiving, we are now accepting orders. I'm also hoping to have some new dried floral works available soon.

Thanks so much for following along and stay well.

--Ben

Frost💀. Always sad to see the season come to such an abrupt end. I wish I had something more eloquent to say, perhaps about seasons and cycles and the beauty of nature’s fleeting tendencies, but it’s not coming to me this morning. I wish I had more time… but don’t we always wish for that?

While one immediate thought is, joy!, a break!, that’s not realistic at all… I’ll begin dismantling the gardens soon, will be digging/storing/dividing tubers, etc. There’s still wedding, classes, and the search for a winter job.

But first, going to gather myself and continue preparing for the Franklin Farmers Market— today at 2pm. We’ll have the last of our own fresh flowers for the year (well, we may still have heirloom Mums… if they survived under the frost cloth!). We’ll also have a variety of gorgeous dried bouquets, and more.

Despite the end coming sooner than I would have desired, it’s been a wonderful season. We are blessed to have fabulous customers, supportive florists, and countless champions. Thank you.

Goodbye 2025 garden, looking forward to 2026– whatever it may bring. 👋🏻🙏🏻💐💕

Favorite fall foliage: Hibiscus acetosella (Mahogany Splendor). Honestly, this stuff lasts quite well if harvested at the proper stage, and conditioned. A lot of folks think it’s a Japanese maple, or some spectacularly colored pot. But, no, it’s just a sweet, tender Hibiscus which, sadly, will never bloom for me given our short season… Makes a great (but fleeting) hedge though, in a matter of months. Keep in mind if you don’t get on so well with your neighbors…

PS if any florist friends want some, shoot me a message! Tried to grab as much as possible tonight!
