🫛 Sugar Snap Pea Season is Here!

We’re excited to offer freshly picked sugar snap peas, one of the most anticipated highlights of our summer harvests.

Sweet, crisp, and incredibly refreshing, these garden favourites are picked fresh in the morning when their natural sugars are at their peak. The result? A deliciously sweet, satisfying crunch that both kids and adults love.

Ever wondered what makes sugar snap peas different? They’re a cross between snow peas and shelling (garden) peas, giving you the best of both worlds. Unlike shelling peas, you eat the entire crunchy pod along with the tender peas inside, making them a delicious source of fibre. Just rinse and enjoy! Occasionally, you may want to remove the tough string that runs along the seam.

Sugar snap peas are perfect for:
🫛 Snacking straight from the dish
🥗 Adding fresh crunch to salads
🥣 Pairing with hummus or your favourite dip
🍜 Tossing into stir-fries

The August long weekend is almost here, and with the hot weather sticking around, there’s no better excuse to keep the oven off and fire up the grill instead. 🔥

We are fully stocked with a fantastic selection of pasture-raised pork and lamb products from Lakeside Livestock, including barbecue favourites like:

Don’t forget that summer vegetables (like zucchini) are incredible on the grill and make the perfect addition to any barbecue.

Fresh Picked Raspberries Now in the Farm Store! ❤️

Few things say summer quite like a handful of fresh-picked raspberries. This year we’re once again harvesting several delicious varieties, from classic red raspberries with their bright, tangy-sweet flavour to our highly sought-after golden yellow raspberries. These are always a customer favourite thanks to their incredibly sweet, almost honey-like taste.

Not only are raspberries bursting with flavour, they’re also packed with nutritional benefits. They’re an excellent source of fibre, vitamin C, and antioxidants, making them perfect for enjoying fresh by the handful or adding to yogurt, ice cream, smoothies, baking, and so much more.

Like everything we grow at MD Gardens, our raspberries are grown naturally without chemical sprays, so you can savour every bite knowing they’re as wholesome as they are delicious. 😋

Half pints are now available in our onsite Farm Store while supplies last.

With the forecasted climbing temperatures 🥵 for the week, feasting on a fresh, vibrant salad is hard to beat! Moreover, with lettuce that looks this beautiful, why turn on the oven? Let the garden do the cooking instead!

At MD Gardens, we grow artisan lettuce varieties because they’re packed with flavour, texture, and colour. Even better, we harvest them daily and sell them as living lettuce - roots and all. Keeping the root ball slightly moist helps your lettuce stay crisp and fresh longer in the fridge, meaning less waste and more delicious salads.

You’ll also notice our lettuce is wrapped like a bouquet in kraft paper that you can recycle afterwards. It’s our way of protecting those delicate leaves while avoiding plastic packaging, which is better for your lettuce and kinder to the planet. 💚

Right now in our on-site Farm Store, we’ve got everything you need to build an incredible salad:
-Cucumbers

-Fresh herbs

Our favourite Saskatoon berry U-pick is opening this Friday, July 17! 🫐

For our family, this is one of the highlights of summer. Every year for almost the last decade, we head out to pick enough berries for fresh eating, baking, smoothies, and the freezer so we can enjoy a taste of Saskatchewan all year long.

If you’ve never experienced a Saskatoon berry U-pick, now is the time! The Saskatoon berry season is unfairly short, so don’t wait too long. Get out there early to beat the heat and the birds, who are just as eager for these berries as we are! 🐦☀️

Please share the news with friends and family so everyone can fill their pails with these nutritious, sun-warmed berries while supporting a local orchard that has become a true community treasure.

We hope to see some of you out there this weekend making memories, picking to stock your freezer, and supporting this wonderful local business. Local food always tastes a little sweeter, especially in berry form! 💜

🍓 Beat the Heat with Homemade Strawberry Lime Paletas! 😋

When the temperatures climb, there’s nothing better than a cool treat that doesn’t compromise on nutrition. Paletas or traditional Mexican fruit popsicles are one of our favourite ways to celebrate fresh fruit during the summer. Because paletas are made with real fruit (opposed to frozen juice or flavoured water), they retain many of the vitamins, minerals, and fibre that make fruit such a healthy choice.

Paletas generally come in two delicious styles: fruit-based (water) or creamy (milk). Our version leans creamy, blending naturally sweet strawberries with coconut milk (instead of condensed milk or heavy cream), a touch of maple syrup, fresh lime, and a pinch of salt to make the strawberry flavour shine. For the sweetest, freshest strawberry flavour, use the ripest berries you can find. We happen to know a place, if needed. 😉

Making paletas is a fun summer activity to do with the kids and the possibilities are endless! Mix and match your favourite fruits/veg combos (avocado, peach, mango, even corn) and use herbs, citrus, or even spices to create your own signature paleta.

Our Strawberry Lime Coconut Paletas
🍓 ¾ -1 lb fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and chopped
🥥 1 cup coconut milk or Greek yogurt
🍁 2 tbsp maple syrup or honey
🍋 Zest and juice of 1 lime or lemon
🧂 Pinch of salt

Blend until smooth (or leave a few chunks if you like extra fruit texture), pour into popsicle molds, and freeze until firm.

🌻 A little sunshine goes a long way!

The recent stretch of hot weather has our specialty sunflowers putting on a show! They are blooming in abundance this week and we are delighted to be sharing these cheerful beauties with you.

Our pollen-free, long-lasting specialty sunflower bunches are the perfect thing to brighten your home or surprise someone special with a bundle of joyful sunshine!

We also have fragrant sweet peas available - ask for a bunch to be harvested fresh.

As with everything at our urban farm store, our flowers are grown in small batches and harvested fresh, so supplies are limited.
