All fully automatic espresso machines have a brew unit (or brew group) and keeping it clean is essential for great-tasting coffee and a healthy machine.

Depending on your machine, the brew unit may be removable or built in. If it’s removable, we recommend taking it out about once a week and rinsing it thoroughly under the tap. For non-removable brew units, your machine may use a cleaning tablet or automatic deep-cleaning cycle instead. Manufacturers may also refer to this process as “coffee oil cleaning.”

Keep in mind: cleaning the brew unit is not the same as descaling. Each tackles a different type of buildup, so always follow your manufacturer’s recommended cleaning and maintenance instructions.

Skipping regular brew unit cleaning can lead to bad-tasting coffee, coffee or grinder blockages, mold buildup, and even machine failure.

It’s a simple maintenance step that can make a big difference, helping your espresso machine perform its best while keeping every cup tasting fresh.

Coffee Tip Tuesday: Get Your Grind Right!

Grinding your coffee beans fresh before brewing helps preserve flavour and aroma but consistency is key!

A few quick grinding tips:
• Dial in your grind size: Espresso running too fast? Grind finer. Too slow? Try slightly coarser.
• Keep your dose consistent: Weigh your coffee for more repeatable espresso shots.
• Use a dosing ring: It keeps freshly ground coffee in the portafilter, reducing mess and wasted grounds.
• Grind fresh: For the best flavour, grind your beans right before brewing.

Small adjustments to your coffee grinder can make a big difference in your espresso. All products used in the video are linked.
