Good morning! We are grateful to be in the midst of green bean season! They are just starting to produce and we have been able to send peas, beans, and garlic scapes so far to the local food program. Lots more beans to come too! Garlic will be prepped with some to donate and some to sell in the coming weeks.

We could definitely use more help to boost the productivity of the space (and you get a share of the food!) but so far we are more productive than last year so there’s lots to be grateful for! Reach out if you want to become part of our little farm family- work hard, eat well :)

The beautiful solstice this weekend means we are now in the thick of it- the beauty, the tastes, the labour and sweat of summer! It’s been many hours now of sweating- clearing, prepping, planting and now harvesting! Strawberries are the sweet reward for our collective efforts this part of the season (just after the asparagus that just passed!). We still need weeders and waterers to sign up - once a week is great! signing up is getting there for an orientation visit, signing the waiver, and joining our WhatsApp group for updates. We grow as a group and eat as one too! We aim to be fair based on the work put in and our abundant crops are distributed through our local food program.

If you're dreaming of greener days and fresh vegetables...and are open to bussing/driving out to Petersburg to join us at the mini-farm- we are a hard-working bunch that is welcoming to partners! Commitment is at least 1 visit (around 3 hours) a week for most (3/4) weeks from May-October- we always plan for one weekend day and weekdays are more variable. We also really appreciate when folks join in these early days because there's a lot to do before the growing begins! You get a share of the food, the joy, and the good feeling of supporting your neighbours through donations! Message and we will get back as soon as we can!

Garlic doesn't always want to last until spring. This winter, I've been dehydrating and grinding up my own garlic powder. The taste is amazing!

Others that we are usually still eating in January:
-frozen foods (we had a freezer failure though that sadly took many of them)
-jams (strawberry-serviceberry)
-dried beans (if not saved for seed!)
-some greens from under the snow (Parsley/hardy greens)
-lots of Squash! (from the home garden- hopefully the mini-farm will produce many this year!)

At "Winterfest," our seasonal neighbourhood party, we brought bean dip to share- made from the beans shelled at the harvest celebration (by the kids- I wonder if any of them remembered this promise I made?)! If you aren't someone who has really used dry beans- here are a few pictures of the magic. From what looks like a small amount of beans to about 3 cans worth, cooked up in an Instant Pot!

We have wrapped up the 2025 growing season and are grateful for everything it has offered us! Also were grateful to send some donations (photos below) to the Sunnydale food program at the end of the season (before and after the frosts began!).

We will meet again in February to plan for the upcoming season. If you are in the neighbourhood and want to be a part of a little community who works and harvests together (for our tables and to share out to the community), please reach out before the end of January and attend the February meeting (commitment=2-4 hours/week most weeks from April-October). Otherwise, we will move to work with friends and family from around the region- although our abundant crops will still be shared with the food program!

Mini-farm season is wrapping up over the next four weeks! If you're interested in joining the growing next year (for fresh veg/fruit, exercise, and connection!)- reach out as we can meet up on October 25th for a short pre-2026 orientation and work day!

Recruiting and bringing people on board is tough mid-season- and we are setting up for a stellar and productive 2026- so want to invite you to join for next year NOW! We need committed people who plan to come at least once a week most weeks from April-October to the giant 'community garden' site in Petersburg. Hope to build more connections with neighbours- so those in/close to Lakeshore South (or friends/family of neighbours) would be ideal!

Donations and Garlic fundraiser update!

Even with a smaller yield than hoped, we are happy we got to offer another bin of produce today with potatoes, beans, tomatoes+

Your gardens might be giving extra zucchini, tomatoes and more- if you want to send your donation to the Sunnydale food program, reach out and we can arrange this (Wednesday evening pickup/dropoffs).

Garlic fundraiser update:

We are now at $125 and over half of our goal (of $225- for the lease and seed!) and still have about 50 garlic bulbs left. Min donation of $2/head, at this point, if you donate more than $2/head, we will be able to donate some of this right to the food program!

Garlic Sale/Fundraiser!

Beautiful local bulbs grown by your neighbours! Min donation of $2/bulb, goal of $225 to cover the lease fee and some seed :) If we get to $225, we will donate the rest via the food program at Sunnydale! Delivery available!

Reply here with the # of bulbs and I will set them aside. Then let me know your donation amt and address by private msg and I can tuck them in a mailbox/porch next weekend (likely Sunday or might split if many dif ppl!)

Our little mini-farm is about learning and growing together and doing our best to grow to donate in our community. This hasn’t been easy this year as our crops are crying out for more manure/compost, so we are planning a big fall application. Reach out if you want to join for a fall/winter orientation to prep for next year!
