Lots has changed for Jolene over the past nine days. Today she came to Winners with Mike and I. Jolene is the dog who likes the car the least and she has never been that far since the day we brought her home. She used to get car sick. She no longer does that, but it’s not a calming time for her. That said, she likes to be with her people, so she’s learning. She thought Winners was pretty interesting but not sure she was quite ready for all that stimulation. After she peed on the floor in the dog section, her and Mike returned to the car. After Winners we met up with Louis and she was happy to see him in the wild. lol.

A big part of healing is getting back to doing the things you love. For Jolene (and our son Louis), that’s anything water-related. Louis’ favourite thing to do with the dogs was take them on walks that almost always involved water. Tuesday night him & his girlfriend came to take Jolene out for the first time since the accident. This was bittersweet as it brings back many memories, especially of Lucille who also loved her journeys with Louis.
Him and his girlfriend took Jolene to Smiley’s Park and you can see the joy in her face. He shared these pictures with me & I thought you might like to see them as well.

Jolene and her sister Lucille were from the same litter. We tried our best to support them in having separate identities but Jolene developed littermate syndrome at an early age. It wasn’t too bad, she did still bond with her humans, there was no aggression etc. The main impact on Jolene was that she could not stand it when her sister was out of her sight. She would scream and cry and run back and forth between the door and the windows like a maniac until she returned. So, when this happened I said to Mike that she had to see the bodies so she would know. I believe that worked. She stopped frantically searching. However, as expected, she has transferred some of that obsession to Mike. She gets pretty worked up when he is out of sight. It’s been improving but today was a bit too much. Because I was home, he was outside several hours today and this is the result. She just can’t contain the anxiety any longer. We are working to gradually increase her tolerance. We will get there. It’s very early days yet.
