Yup, thatโ€™s right! Watermelon harvest has started on the farm ๐Ÿ‰

On our farm, we grow seedless watermelon. Loved by many for the convenience of not having to spit out seeds, there is a very cool science lesson that comes with growing seedless watermelon ๐Ÿค“

In order to grow a seedless watermelon, we as growers must cross whatโ€™s called a diploid plant (a plant containing 2 standard sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (4 sets of chromosomes). By interplanting these two types of melons, the cross pollination that takes place allows for the creation of a triploid plant - what you know and love as a seedless watermelon. Isnโ€™t science amazing?!

Weโ€™ve been keeping a close eye on our melon plantings and our earliest variety of muskmelon is finally ready! With that being said, supply is limited with this initial harvest. As the week progresses, we will have more that are ripe, ready and delicious!

Is it any different from a cantaloupe? While muskmelons and cantaloupes look very similar, there are a few differences. The main difference is that muskmelons have a softer texture, whereas cantaloupes have a firmer texture to them.

We are SO close to starting sweet corn harvest on the farm! ๐ŸŒฝ

Before you know it, youโ€™ll be enjoying the fresh taste of homegrown sweet corn on your dinner plate. But, letโ€™s be honest for a moment - we canโ€™t rush perfection. Being this close to harvest means weโ€™re checking fields frequently to ensure we harvest at prime taste and quality.

Life on the farm is never dull! As the growing season progresses, we are wrapping up on one harvest only to get setup to go onto the next.

ASPARAGUS
Today is our LAST DAY for asparagus at the stand. We appreciate everyone who has stopped in and enjoyed local asparagus this year!

Our harvest season always starts with asparagus and even though it is wrapping up, thereโ€™s lots of other fresh and local flavours getting ready to be harvested in the field. This does mean we will need to close the stand for a little while.

In a few weeks time we will have SWEET CORN, so please stay up to date through our social media pages for when harvest will begin. After that, we will be getting into MUSKMELONS and WATERMELONS! ๐Ÿฅณ
