Quality Cattle: One Breeding at a time.
I suppose you could say it started when my grandfather decided to try a new breed. The breed was Fleckvieh, the year 1971 (I believe). The first imports were not released until 1972. From there, it was history. Forty-five years later and the breed has continued to excel. Most of the fullblood cattle in the Canadian Simmental breed have Fleckvieh influence in them. The majority probably have the equivalence of 2 generations Fleckvieh breeding. Fleckvieh moderated, thickened, and added vigour to the Swiss and French Simmental. The Fleckvieh was and is a better beef animal. Your typical Fleckvieh cow should have no problems raising twins if she has them (some may be inclined to say not if but when...). However, moving along. As per tradition, Grandpa would gift the grandkids with a Fullblood open heifer, typically born the same year we were. That was the start of our herds, both commercial and purebred animals began from that heifer. Some of us did well and some, like myself, had to have our herds restarted (I am on my third line from Grandpa. The first one had temperament issues and the second one just did not replace herself all too well.). However, regardless of the setbacks, I loved the cattle and still do. To see progress in a breeding program, the new calves, the pregnant cows, the herd bulls, the 3 month old calves and the weaned calves. The calves in the middle of winter, when they mature and become breds, breeding bulls or steers ready to sell at the auction mart. Whether commercial or purebred, I like em all. I am the second son, the third eldest in the family of 8 kids. My parents are Scott and Wendy Letts. They operate Pemlock Simmentals.
While I had the influence of Bar None in the herd, I have also bought a few females in the last few years. Two breds were picked up in the Darrel F. Maronda dispersal sale of November 2015. Two solid females. Another bred was picked up at Wyvern Cattle Co (Robert Lippiat) in December of 2015. . Breeding females have been added from Simmeron Ranch, Martin Skaret, as well. These females, so far, are the foundation to the SRL Cattle Co. Fleckvieh herd.
Committed to quality, reliability and honesty. I will do my best to give the customer as much information as I have on my cattle. Anything from temperament, udder quality, teat quality, feet, calving history and etc. If my herd does not fit with your goals or I do not have a bull that suits your needs; then do not buy from me. Simple as that. I will show you what I have but if it is not what you are looking for. That is fine. When you see the brand, Bar Anchor S, I hope that it will be a positive connotation. I will strive to make sure that it is.
