Curtis Riemer started grain farming in 1982 with his dad, Don. In 1986, Curtis decided to chase his love of Black Angus cattle by purchasing pure bred Black Angus heifers. These heifers had the strong maternal traits Curtis wanted to see in the future heard. He began with a registered pure-bred herd but decided to go down the commercial route while still using high performance pure bred Black Angu
s bulls. And that's when Artesian Angus Farms was born. Today, the farm consists of three generations running a mixed farming operation 10 miles northeast of White Fox, SK. The family includes Curtis and Shari Riemer with their three kids Triston Gallais (Todd Gallais) and their 3 kids, Taryn Milton (Cody Milton) and Kole Riemer (Erika Riemer) and their 2 kids. Actively farming with the parents are Triston and Todd Gallais, Kole and Erika Riemer, Don Riemer and Connor Riemer. The farm grows a variety of crops including: canola, oats, wheat, barley, peas, red clover, and hay and barley/oat silage crops for the cattle. The farm works towards regenerative agriculture practices with both operations. They find the grain and cattle integrate with each other very well to make these practices successful. We run approximately 450 straight bred Black Angus cows that calve on pasture in the beginning of May. Our goal has always been to have a strong maternal herd with high performance. By selecting for this over the years, we have been able to produce a large number of heifers that we can use as replacements and also have a surplus to sell in our annual bred heifer sale in the beginning of March. These heifers have the strong maternal qualities that the rest of the herd also has: fertility, milk production, easy keeping, eye appeal, good temperament, growth, sound legs and feet and impressive hair quality. We like to breed our heifers to low birth weight bulls with high performance. As an effort to get ourselves closer to the consumer we have started selling beef to local businesses. Our beef is processed at L&B Family Meats, White Fox, SK. Over the years our high quality Black Angus cuts of meat have been sold to Mabel Hill Farm Kitchen & Marketplace Nipawin, SK, StaggerIn Bar and Grill, Love, SK, J n J’s General Store, White Fox, SK, The Dam Smokehouse Nipawin, SK., Coonies Nipawin, SK. We have also supplied directly to the consumer where we offer 1/4, 1/2 and whole beef options. Our overall goal for Artesian Angus Farms is to continue to grow and produce a top quality Black Angus herd that yields a uniform calf crop on both male and female side. We also feel it is important to continue our regenerative agriculture practices, so future generations can continue to farm for years to come.
