Community Update

We wanted to take a moment to update the community regarding recycling and refunds at the Mt. Lorne site.

After a lot of consideration, Tom has decided to leave the site and has accepted another position elsewhere. It’s been a difficult decision to step away, but he will continue working in recycling in a new capacity. We are incredibly grateful for all of the support from the community over the years — thank you.

A few upcoming changes:

♻️ Recycling
This weekend will be the last weekend that Long Recycling Solutions will oversee the current recycling setup. After this weekend, the system will transition to larger collection bins. We will share more information as updates become available.

🍾 Refunds
Long Recycling Solutions will continue overseeing refunds through this weekend. At this time, we are still waiting for confirmation on what the plan will be moving forward, but we will update the community as soon as we know more. If anyone has any interest in taking over refunds please email community services.

As we head into Free Week, please know we will do our best to keep the recycling area organized. However, staff will only be onsite Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM–4 PM for refunds and recycling organization.

We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this transition, and once again, thank you to the community for all of your support.

This page will now be focused on recycling and refundables only at the Mt. Lorne Transfer Station.

Refundable hours:
Saturday & Sunday: 11:00 – 4:00

Recycling:
Recycling will remain accessible during all site opening hours:
Monday & Friday: 7:00 – 3:00
Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 – 6:00

Community Services will be there to explain the recent transfer station contract decision and tender process, including why the lowest bid was chosen.

A chance for community members to ask questions, share perspectives, and speak to what community values matter in decisions like this.

Message from Mike-

I just want to say thank you.

The support from this community has meant more to me than I can say. Thank you for supporting not just the site, but the team as well — that truly means a great deal.

What started nearly 30 years ago as a simple site grew into something much more — a place of connection, reuse, and community — and that’s because of all of you.

It’s been an honour to be part of it. I’m incredibly proud of what we built together.

As I head into retirement, I do so with a lot of gratitude.

We wanted to share an update with our community regarding the Mt. Lorne Transfer Station.

First, thank you. The support we’ve received lately has meant so much to our family and our team—it truly does not go unnoticed.

Long Recycling Solutions (Tom & other team members)will continue to manage recycling and refundables at the site. However, with the contracts now separated, the funding and workload associated with recycling and refundables has changed, as the main attendant services contract was not awarded to us. Because of this, we are no longer able to operate at the full-time hours the community has been used to.

As a result, refund hours will be reduced starting next weekend. This weekend hours will remain the same.

At this time, we are proposing the following schedule for refundables:
Saturday & Sunday: 11:00 – 4:00

Recycling will continue to be managed by us, and the recycling area will remain accessible during all site operating hours.

Before finalizing, we would really like to hear from the community. If there are alternative days or times that would better serve you, please let us know—we want to make sure we are supporting the community in the best way we can within the current constraints.

We know how important the transfer station is to this community, and we are very sorry for the impact this may have. We remain committed to continuing this work and supporting you however we can.
