Rabbits. I admit, those hobbits were definitely on to something.
When Greg first mentioned the idea of raising rabbits for meat, I gave him a hard ‘no’. We’d never tried rabbit, why would we raise them before actually tasting them? And how the heck do you cook a rabbit? I didn’t bother with a google search.
But he persisted. And he convinced our daughters of how fun it would be to care for rabbits. Once they were convinced, how could I say no?
So now we raise rabbits. And it’s been amazing.
Sure, they’re cute pets and that’s fine, but they also make really excellent stew, etc. Especially when they’re cooked with bacon (we raise the pork too). Or smoked on the bbq.
They also make an excellent quality raw dog food, if eating meat isn’t your thing, but your dog is into it.
The amazing thing about raising rabbits is that you really don’t need much space for them -an urban backyard or garage is all you need.
So if you’re looking to raise your own food, but just don’t have that country property yet, rabbits are an excellent option.
Our daughters would happily get some rabbits into your life (sorry, local friends only…we won’t be shipping rabbits across the country). My handy carpenter husband would also build a hutch for you, if you need.
