Food affordability in the North isnโt an abstract issue. It affects families, households, and communities every day.
Nutrition North Canada is intended to help reduce the cost of food and essential goods in isolated Northern communities. But for that support to work as intended, the way the subsidy is calculated matters.
In this video, real products are weighed and tested against the programโs calculation. The results raise an important question about whether a flat, one-size-fits-all approach accurately reflects what is actually being shipped North.
In the examples tested, the difference was significant, more than six times what the flat charging rule accounts for.
And that leads to a larger question about transparency.
Businesses participating in the program are expected to be transparent about how the subsidy is applied. Northern communities should be able to expect transparency when significant changes are made to a program that directly affects the price of food.
