❤️ Nominated for Agri-Business of the Year! ❤️

We were honoured to hear that we’ve been nominated for Agri-Business of the Year by the Lambton County Chamber of Commerce! 🌱🚜

What a huge compliment! To us, a nomination like this means someone has noticed the work, the long hours, the passion, and the heart that go into running our family farm and market. It means someone sees what we’re doing and believes it matters. And that means more than you know!

There’s just one little problem… 😂

The nomination came during the two busiest months of our entire year!

September and October are when we’re outside from morning until night, harvesting, picking, packing, stocking shelves, welcoming customers, hosting school field trips, keeping up with u-pick, preparing Thanksgiving orders, filling produce boxes, and doing our best to keep everything running smoothly.

And paperwork? Well… let’s just say we were doing good to get the bills paid!

Unfortunately, we didn’t get our application paperwork completed in time to qualify for the award.

Is it a little disappointing? Of course. But here’s the thing…

What kept us from completing the paperwork is the very thing that got us nominated in the first place. ❤️

We were too busy doing what we love!

To know that YOU thought of us and took the time to nominate us is the real honour.

We are here first and foremost for our customers. If we don’t receive an award because we didn’t get the paperwork done, that’s disappointing. But it’s because we were outside, doing the work, growing your food, and welcoming you to our farm.

And honestly? We wouldn’t trade that for anything.

So to whoever nominated us, and to every one of you who shops with us, supports local, brings your children to the farm, and makes Zekveld’s Garden Market part of your weekly routine…

THANK YOU! 🥹❤️

You’ve already given us something pretty special.

🏆 The real win is having customers who believe in what we do.

💥What is this?????

Hint…it’s more then a decoration and tastes great! Any idea?

More info…..It is a rare, 17th-century Japanese heirloom winter squash (Cucurbita moschata). It features a small, squat, heavily ribbed, and bumpy appearance that shifts from a deep black-green to a dusty gray-buff or chestnut color as it cures, offering bright orange flesh with a sweet, nutty, and buttery flavor.

?Guess it yet?

It is a squash with an Edible Skin: Unlike many winter squashes, the thin skin is completely edible and softens when cooked, tasting similar to a baked potato skin.

?Need help with the name?

Answer…Black Futsu Squash!

We love it! Cut it in half. Take out the seeds and “guts”. Cut into wedges. Put on a greased cookie sheet. Add favourite seasoning. Bake on 375 for about a half hour. Enjoy with or either out the skin. (We like the skin)

We have this squash on front of the store! A great decoration on your porch…until supper😋

💜🎃 WHY IS MY PUMPKIN PURPLE? 🎃💜

Have you heard of the Purple Pumpkin Campaign? It’s all about raising awareness and starting conversations about epilepsy. Epilepsy Ontario

💜 What is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes a person to have a tendency to experience seizures. It can affect people of all ages, and every person’s experience is different.

💜 Do you have a loved one in your family who is living with epilepsy?
Maybe it’s a child, grandchild, friend, or someone else you care about. By sharing awareness, we can help others better understand epilepsy, show support, and remind families that they are not alone.

🎃 Want to join the purple pumpkin fun?

You don’t have to paint your pumpkin purple! You can decorate it in all kinds of creative ways. 💜

We had fun using crayons and stickers to decorate ours! 🖍️✨

If you choose to paint your pumpkin, consider using environmentally friendly, biodegradable products where possible, and dispose of any leftover paint properly to help protect our soil and waterways.

💜 Let’s turn our pumpkins purple and help spread awareness! We have lots of sizes and shapes for you to get started

Have you ever decorated a purple pumpkin? Share your pictures with us! And if epilepsy has touched your family, feel free to share your story or leave a 💜 in the comments to show your support.

🎃 PUMPKIN PANCAKES FOR SUPPER! 🥞

It’s pumpkin season, so I’ll be sharing a few recipes to help you make the most of those pie pumpkins! 🎃🍂

Tonight’s supper was pumpkin pancakes. Why? Well, I had grapes steaming on the burners to make grape juice, so I needed something a little different for supper! 😂🍇 You make do with what’s happening in the kitchen!

Did you know how much pumpkin you can get from ONE little pie pumpkin?

I steamed one small pie pumpkin and ended up with 3 CUPS of homemade pumpkin purée! 🙌

That’s a great way to stretch your grocery budget, and it tastes SO much better than canned pumpkin. No additives, just pure pumpkin!

I actually did up SIX pumpkins while my oven was running so I’d have plenty of purée ready for all kinds of pumpkin recipes. A little planning saves time and money! ❤️

🥞 HOMEMADE PUMPKIN PANCAKES

Ingredients:

● 1 cup all-purpose flour
● 2 tbsp brown sugar
● 3 tsp baking powder
● 1 tsp cinnamon
● ¼ tsp salt
● 1 cup milk
● 1 cup pumpkin purée
● 2 egg
● 1/4 tsp ginger
⚫️ 1/4 tsp nutmeg
● 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

1. In a bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, spices and salt.
2. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, pumpkin purée, egg, and vanilla.
3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined. Don’t overmix!
4. Heat a lightly greased frying pan over medium heat.
5. Pour about 1/2 cup batter per pancake into the pan. Cook until bubbles form on top, then flip and cook until golden and cooked through.
6. Serve warm with butter and real maple syrup! 🍁

A few pumpkin tips! 🎃
✔️ Roast or steam your pie pumpkins until tender.
✔️ Scoop out the flesh and blend until smooth.
✔️ If your purée is watery, strain it before using it in recipes.
✔️ Freeze in 1-cup or ½-cup portions so it’s ready for baking, soups, muffins, breads and pancakes!

One pumpkin, so many possibilities!

Tell me… have you ever made your own pumpkin purée, or do you usually buy it in a can? 👇

🎃 DON’T THROW THOSE PUMPKIN SEEDS AWAY! 🎃

Did you know you can turn the seeds from your pumpkin into a delicious, crunchy snack? 😋 Perfect for enjoying while carving pumpkins with the family!

📝🚸📚perfect activity to do with your class at school. Special pricing for teachers using pumpkins in their classroom!🍎

🌱 HOW TO MAKE ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS

1️⃣ GUT YOUR PUMPKIN
Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp with a sturdy spoon. Place everything in a large bowl.

2️⃣ CLEAN THE SEEDS
Separate the seeds from the stringy pumpkin pulp. Rinse them in a colander under cold water until clean.

3️⃣ BOIL THE SEEDS
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add your seeds and simmer for 10 minutes. This helps season them and makes them easier to roast.

4️⃣ DRY THEM WELL
Drain the seeds and pat them dry with a clean towel. The drier they are, the crispier they’ll get!

5️⃣ SEASON & ROAST
Toss the seeds with a little olive oil or melted butter and your favourite seasonings.

🧂 Try salt, garlic powder, paprika or cinnamon sugar!

Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast at 325°F (165°C) for 20–30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until golden and crunchy. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn!

6️⃣ COOL & CRUNCH!
Let them cool before enjoying. Store any leftovers in an airtight container once completely cooled.

🍂 A little pumpkin, a little time, and a tasty snack with very little waste! Perfect for a cold fall day!

Have you ever roasted your own pumpkin seeds? Tell us your favourite seasoning in the comments! 👇
