Sauvignon Blanc commands attention in the Loire Valley. And for good reason.

But there are other worthwhile grapes too. Grolleau Gris is one of them. An indigenous grape from the region.

It’s fresh, a little more textured and somewhat softer around the edges. Less cut grass and citrus punch vs Sauvignon Blanc, with the added touch of some tropical fruit notes.

If you normally reach for Sauvignon Blanc, or like Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris, this is a a nice alternative to explore.

This is Grolleau Gris by Domaine du Haut Bourg in the Loire Valley. Perfect for summer - sushi, seafood, BBQ, cheese.

A few of the winemakers we'll be sharing at Wine Date in Basel this week.

- Small wineries.
- 3rd Generation winemakers family estates.
- Younger winemakers bringing new energy, reworking tradition in their own modern way.
- Different perspectives behind each bottle

All of them care about how they farm, focusing on healthy grapes and minimal intervention.

Rioja, Sierra de Gredos, Umbria, Loire Valley, Ribeira Sacra and more….

Sparkling, still, sweet. Old vines, new energy. Looking forward to sharing a bit of their world this week.

It was a great session at this week’s Wine Fundamentals course in Basel.

We started with the basics of winemaking, then quickly moved into tasting and learning together. Lots of questions. Lots of discussion. And a lot of fun along the way.

It was really nice to see people making connections, building their sensory library, and asking whatever came to mind.

And most importantly, leaving a bit more confident in the styles they enjoy and the choices they make.

Thanks to everyone who joined. An engaged and curious group😊

Looking forward to our May session.

Wine Date, Basel 🍷. We’ll be there next week pouring wines we’re a little obsessed with.

Small producers. Old vines. Bottles you don’t usually bump into. Spain, France, Italy.

Come say hello. Looking forward to it....

Garnacha Blanca from Aragón by Libre y Salvaje, taken in two different directions.

- Fresh and bright: blended with Macabeu.
- Complex & layered: 100% Garnacha Blanca, barrel / clay fermented.

Same grape, different expression. From old vines and organic farming. We’ll be pouring both this Thursday.

Garnacha Blanca doesn’t get the same attention as its red counterpart. But that’s changing.

Once widely planted across Spain, it was largely pulled out in favour of easier, higher-yielding varieties. Now, a new generation of winemakers is going back to old vineyards, working with lower yields and focusing on quality over volume.

The result? White wines with texture, balance & depth. Pear, herbs, citrus, some pastry notes and freshness holding it all together.

If you’re exploring Spanish white wines beyond the usual, Garnacha Blanca is worth knowing. Especially from regions like Aragón, where old vines and altitude bring a bit more structure and acidity.

Citrus and white fruit, a touch of spice, layered….

This is Rioja, just not the version most have in mind. This is old vine Viura from a small plot in Islallana.

“Tierroya” is what locals call this place, named after its red, iron-rich soils. It’s a charming backstory and a wine worth discovering.

Taste it with us on 23rd April.

Garnacha, from a quieter corner. Aragón is one of Garnacha's homes. But it never made much noise about it.

And in Cariñena DO, one of Spain’s oldest regions, things are shifting a bit.

Ignacio Marín, owner and winemaker at Libre y Salvaje, is part of that.

Old plots being brought back. Care by hand. Organic. Minimal intervention.

We like that. Nothing overdone. Nothing missing. Just really great wines from a refreshingly determined young winemaker.

We’re really glad we found them. More to come….

Last Saturday, we hosted an intimate tasting with some of our customers. A relaxed evening with new wines🍷, recent vintages and easy conversation.

New vintages from Las Pedreras, Panorámico, Dominio do Bibei and Agri Segretum. And, an introduction to some great new wines we’re loving from Libre y Salvaje (more to come on this….)

We decided to surprise with the blind this time (Alicante Bouschet from Tuscany). Not what anyone expected, which made it even more fun!

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We’re already looking forward to the next one😊
