Domaine Bénédicte et Stéphane Tissot Poulsard Vieilles Vignes 2020

🍇 Old vine Poulsard from Les Bruyères, La Mailloche, and La Vasée parcels in Arbois. Soils of clay. No added SO2.

A Poulsard with pronounced peppery notes, making it reminiscent of a cab franc. This is followed by a jovial mix of red berries, watermelon and red roses, along with a touch of tomato paste, black tea, and hay. The mouthfeel is supple, framed by ripe, dusty tannins and a bright acidity. The finish is quite beautiful here with good length, lingering on black cherry, black chocolate and recurring black tea. There is a welcome amount of purity, thanks to the absence of SO2 and quality winemaking. A very good effort, if not somewhat atypical for the variety. It does unfortunately become quite mousy on day 2, so it is advised to consume during one sitting (90).

Domaine de Saint Pierre Le Blanc 2021

🍇 All the Chardonnay and Savagnin from the domaine assembled together due to the catastrophic spring frost that drastically reduced yields. 10mg/L of SO2 added at bottling.

Expressive and complex bouquet of confit lemons, beeswax, key lime pie, smoke, sesame, butter, gooseberries, white peaches, Chinotto, and sea breeze. The sapid palate is well balanced and medium weighted, showing a vibrant energy. The first attack is bright and citrus focused, with refreshing lemon peel and lime, followed by more tropical aromatics such as mango. There is a pronounced slate and flinty minerality that provides a beautiful sense of tense verticality. Finish of grapefruit bitters. While this may not be as profound as the 2019 edition, it’s a delicious wine in its own right. One that easily holds up and develops beautifully over 2 days. This has plenty of room to further unwind over the next years (94+).

Domaine de la Borde Plous’saperlipopette 2023

🍇 Poulsard from Arbois Pupillin grown on soils of clay from the Lias and the Trias. 80% de-stemmed. No added SO2.

Translucent light red. Opens with some smoky reduction and funk. It then gives way to very pure and elegant aromas of red berries, followed by rhubarb, red roses, watermelon, and plums. The profile is completed with a hint of saline, soy-like umami. Texturally very light, with a soft gentle tannic structure, with recurring strawberry bubble gum. The finish is medium with lingering scents of citrus bitters. This is almost like a rosé but with a lot of depth. A real treat. While this is drinking very well now, it should develop over the next 5+ years. A domaine that seems to be on the ascent, and one to follow closely (90+).

Domaine de Saint Pierre Chapon 2018

🍇 40 year old Chardonnay from Arbois, grown on soils of marl and limestone. Hand harvested grapes and immediately refrigerated. Aged in 500L barrels. No added SO2.

While the Chapon is usually not the domaine’s best cuvée, this is just stellar. This continuously improves over the course of 24 hours. Very expressive bouquet of wax, honey, attractive reduction, fresh herbs, stone fruits, chamomile, pineapple, orange peel, tropical, vanilla, burnt caramel, and hazelnut, along with floral acacia perfumes and saline minerals. The palate is generously weighted and rich but very well balanced by its fresh acidity. The finish is long and complex with lingering notes of caramel and confit grapefruit bitters. It is particularly impressive for a 2018 white to be able to maintain so much verve, energy, and precision despite the heat of the vintage. This is just delicious (95+).

🔥Philippe Bornard Events in Tokyo and Seoul🔥

Philippe Bornard’s makes some of the most soulful, terroir-driven wines of the Jura. Over the years they have reached quasi cult status, and have become some of the hardest wines to find. In many cases, his old vintages are simply not available anymore on the market.

In July, Philippe will be traveling to Tokyo and Seoul for some incredible and rare events, where he will showcase his older vintages, which he will bring from his personal cellar in Pupillin. It will be the first time he returns to Japan in over 10 years and the first time ever in Korea! These are events not to be missed!

We stumbled upon Wayobu Yoshi, a gem of a restaurant in Naha, Okinawa. Delicious food, great wines, minimalist decor, incredibly nice people. If you’re in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and give it a try!

Domaine des Miroirs Entre Deux Bleus 2019

🍇 Savagnin from the village of Grusse. Soils of marl, clay, and limestone. Western exposure.

Still slightly reserved but much more expressive since the last tasted a year ago. It can still use some more years in bottle to unwind but is starting to drink beautifully. Rich notes of caramel, sesame, pink grapefruit, ripe peaches, apricot, fresh grass, hints of strawberry, honey, and dried tropical fruits, complemented by a saline touch, a chalky minerality and a hint of warm nutty oxidation. Some heat from the 13% ABV can be felt. The mouthfeel is broad with a sweet ripe honeyed touch, which is well balanced by the acidity. A finish of gentle citrus bitters, passion fruit, and blond caramel finish. If not for the slight heat, overall a fantastic bottle (94+).
