Les Valseuses Cotidiano 2020

🍇 Direct press Chardonnay, aged for 4 years in barrels. No added SO2.

A highly energetic nose, with attractive reduction. Complemented by a wild yet somehow integrated and fitting volatile acidity, that feels almost like walking a tightrope between balanced and overdone. Notes of beeswax, cantaloupe, roasted apples, and confit lemon lead into a palate of lovely weight and texture. Backed by lively acids, the flavors reveal a charming vanilla sweetness and hints of lemon zest, while some recurring VA provides further airiness. Pure, honest, and delicious, this should age effortlessly for many years to come (93+).

🍇 Savagnin from the lieu-dit Viaduc. Soils of gray marl from the Lias and paper shale. Aged for 3 years in used barrels. 297 bottles made. No added SO2.

Dense and deeply complex, the bouquet opens with a beautiful flinty, mineral reduction. A myriad of exotic fruits, including papaya, mango, and pineapple emerge, complemented by notes of mint, citrus, white chocolate, and dried apricot. The palate is weighty and rich. Bone-dry, yet conveying an almost residual-sugar-like sweetness, the w**e is perfectly balanced by a vivid, chiseled acidity. A touch of volatile acidity adds another layer of freshness. Intense and palate-staining finish, with interminably length of dark chocolate and exotic fruits. A delicious young w**e with exceptional potential for further aging. Unfortunately the production is minuscule (96+).

Domaine des Cavarodes Ostrea Virgula 2023

🍇 Savagnin planted on soils of limestone and marl, with very little top soil. The name of the cuvée is in reference to the high concentration of Jurassic marine shell fossil components in the vineyard’s soil. No added SO2.

This opens very tight, but takes only about 20 minutes in the glass to bloom into wonderfully expressive aromas that are highly representative of Etienne’s premium cuvée and his approach to w**emaking: pure, transparent, and deeply reflective of terroir. The aromatics here are compelling and offer attractive reduction layered with salinity and minerals, followed by a myriad of exotic fruits such as pineapple, quince, ripe pear, and some smoke. A subtle almond-like tiny oxidative quality adds further depth. The acidity is razor-sharp and precise, offering crystalline freshness and remarkable energy. Ripe pear returns on the mid-palate, followed by hints of caramel that emerge on the long, persistent finish. Already delicious, but with plenty of stuffing and structure to age extensively, and improve exponentially. One of the most underrated cuvée and producer in the Jura (94+).

A historic Philippe Chatillon Sage Vagnin dinner at Le Grapiot, in Pupillin. This vertical had never been done before and we are happy to have played a little part in making it happen 🙌

Maison Maenad Réveil Spectral 2023

🍇 Savagnin from the lieu-dit Au Carré. Extended élevage for 3 years in barrel.

Katie’s 2022 edition of this cuvée was already amazing, but this might somehow take things up another notch. Exceptional from the get-go. Luminous and arresting scents of white chocolate, hay, ripe kiwi, pineapple, orange blossom, and salted vegetables, wrapped in a smoky reduction. There is remarkable depth and complexity already, yet the w**e remains wonderfully vibrant. Indeed upon tasting, the texture is intense and charged with energy, balancing richness with chiseled freshness. Recurring white chocolate, with ripe orchard fruits, green tea, and olive oil emerging on the long savory and tapered finish. Still incredibly young, but with all the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over the long term. Exceptional (96+).
