Now that Christmas is over my brain can start planning for the new year. My favorite thing to plan is my next trip to Uganda and I’d love to take you with me! We still have a few spots left for our trip that leaves January 30 with a long layover in Amsterdam. If you like to have fun, try new things, cross off bucket-list items (ahem…2 countries and a safari), meet new people who will become life-long friends, and witness the transformation of entire communities through the efforts of mamas and the people who love them, you are PERFECT for this trip! Id love to answer any questions to see if this might be doable for you.
Never met me before? No problem! I met most of my closest friends in an airport on the way to Uganda. It’s totally normal. I can’t wait to get to know you!

It’s a universal truth that when a woman is expecting guests, the woman will work her butt off to get her house company-ready.

On day 3, all of us went separate direction, and three of us were tasked with making as many home visits as possible. Moms were motivated to work their way through the list of requirements for a model home to see how much they could get done before we arrived.
I had an amazing day!! First of all, I got to ride around on a boda (motorcycle) which is a really fun way to travel. Then I got to talk more in-depth with the moms because I didn’t have a large group with me and was able to take my time.
I also saw new things I’ve never seen before, which is super fun! One of our moms has a pottery business and walked me through the process of preparing clay, forming the pots, and firing them.
Another mom has kind of a “training home” where other moms can come learn different ideas for their own homes. She has a biogas system for fermenting cow manure and harvesting the methane to power lights and a cook stove.
One of my favorite things was seeing moms who have only been in the program for a short time, but have already made huge progress on their model home and different streams of income. They were able to do this because a friend from church who has been in the program for a while taught them these concepts before they were able to join. We have motivated moms changing their lives because they are inspired by their friends.

Best friends from 5 different states that only see each other on Uganda trips? Check. We share the biggest laughs and the deepest conversations. I love them so.

Day 2 wasn’t a super exciting day for pictures, but an incredibly exciting day for content. We spent the morning with staff leadership brainstorming goals and plans for 2025 and we got a lot accomplished. I’m excited to share more as the plans take shape! It’s going to be a great year.

Then Brandi taught a session on emotional and physical regulation with a group of local school teachers. They were very responsive and looking forward to using this knowledge to help their students become better learners. Kids can’t learn if their brains are switched to fight/flight/freeze mode due to past trauma. Hopefully the training will help teachers create safe and supportive environments.

We ended the day by visiting some of the kids in our child-centered household program who are studying to take a huge test in a few weeks. This test will help determine what secondary school they can go to. A few of the kids were even able to FaceTime with their aunties (sponsors) back home. We love these kids dearly and always enjoy hanging out with them.

What a great first day with Heal + Thrive!! We are thrilled to back with our friends in Soroti, Uganda. This is a different sort of trip for us. Instead of bringing a large team, this is a leader trip with the purpose of intense planning, training, and dreaming about the future. 5 of us are here, and we are splitting up most of the week to cover more ground.
We landed in Entebbe and drove to Soroti. Stopping for breakfast and much needed coffee along the way. Once we unloaded at the hotel, we got our assingnents for the day.
Steph, our water specialist, visited some areas that are in dire need of wells. She will be doing more research this week about alternative clean water sources for places where water wells aren’t a viable option, and also get a better picture of where we need to focus on next.
Brandi visited with some of our moms who received business loans recently so she could see their progress. Because of our wonderful donors, Salume received a business loan and business training to open a medical clinic so more people, like sisters Grace and Catherine, can have better access to medical care near where they live.
Chasady worked with some of the office staff to brief them on new software that should make tracking literacy groups and special projects much easier.
Lindsey and I worked with staff members to practice taking awesome photos and videos so they can keep us updated between trips.
We’re running on very little sleep (was it just this morning that we landed in Entebbe?) but it was a productive and exciting day!
