🍸 DULI x Matthias Lundahl POP-UP DINNER

This is how you RESPECT VEGETABLES! has long been my favourite restaurant for experimental plant-based cuisine, often inviting chefs from around the world to create exciting Chinese fusion dishes.

Their new collaboration with chefs and is inspired by Nordic Spring meets traditional Chinese ingredients. The set menu features plates that are fancy, yet humble, and flavours combinations that are both familiar and adventurous. Each course showcases how much fun can be had with plants, and I think even vegetable skeptics would enjoy this limited menu.

This pop up runs from April 17-26 and my favourites have got to be the chilled green vegetable soup (tastes like summers in Spain!) and the beetroot mousse brownie (it's a dessert you won't want to share, so order multiple 😂).

Come visit me in Beijing! 🇨🇳💫

You asked for it, and now it’s here: The first (of hopefully many!) Vegan in China Tour! I’ve spent the last past year creating why I think is the perfect itinerary, combining the most epic sights and secret local gems, and scouting out the best plant based eats in the city. 😋🌱

China is the vegan paradise you see in my videos, but the truth is you need a keen eye, knowledge of Chinese regional cooking methods and ingredients, not to mention a certain competency in Mandarin if you want to experience local cuisine outside the traditional vegetarian restaurant. 🧐

That’s why I want to invite you to see China through my eyes, in the city I’ve called home for the past 7 years. 🥳

What to expect:
⭐️Eating across China - we’ll be trying a new regional cuisine at every meal!
⭐️Deep diving into the complex and fascinating culture of the capital with visits to the Forbidden City and a hiking along a secret section of the Great Wall with NO CROWDS!
⭐️Insight into what life is like here - stroll through the historic hutongs, dance with ayis in the park, and shop for ingredients at the wet market for our hands on cooking class!
⭐️Fully vegan meals without stress or having to explain yourself.
⭐️Small group experience (like *actually* small, only 10 people)

If that sounds like something you’re about, comment “Beijing” and I’ll share the full itinerary and details to sign up! 😁

See you in Beijing! 😘

Breakfast Burrito 🌯 but make it Chinese!

糯米包油条 Nuòmǐ bāo yóutiáo is my new favourite breakfast from Wuhan in China’s Hubei province. It’s basically glutinous rice the texture of chewy mochi enveloping a filling of fried dough sticks (kind of like churro) and your choice of sweet or salty fillings.

My choice is the sweet one with sugar, black sesame and peanuts, but if you're feeling savoury, go for the one with shredded potatoes and Chinese pickles! Both vegan friendly, except the savoury had meat floss by default, which you can ask to omit.

One of the things I love about living in China is the thrill of the treasure hunt for vegan food. Because China used to be quite poor and meat was expensive, many traditionally plant based dishes have been given meaty names to give people the sense of eating more “luxuriously”.

Take for example this 糯米鸡 nuòmǐ jī, literally glutinous rice chicken, which contains no meat or egg, just five spice seasoned rice and dried tofu and a thick batter to imitate chicken skin. So cool!

All drinkable 🥥coconut milk made in China contains casein (酪蛋白làodànbái), a protein derived from cow's milk. Apparently it gives it a "nicer" white colour.

So yes, that means your Luckin coconut latte isn't vegan. Don't worry, we've all been there 😪. It's basically a rite of passage at this point, consider yourself hazed!

What other surprises have you experienced as a vegan, in China or elsewhere? Let's commiserate together in the comments! 💝

There's no breakfast like a WUHAN BREAKFAST! 🌯😋

Nowhere in China does breakfast quite like Wuhan! In fact instead of "eat breakfast" (吃早饭 Chī zǎofàn), they literally say “过早Guò zǎo“ which translates to "CELEBRATE breakfast"!🎊

⭐Here is one of my favourites - 炕豆丝 Kàng dòu sī, a plant-based pancake made from a mixture of bean and rice flours, stuffed with pickled vegetables. I believe this dish could also be made gluten free, but just in case, ask about wheat flour (面粉Miànfěn).
